not sweet protein shakes

Recommended Posts

I'm as big a chocosaurus as the next gal, but I'm noticing that all of these Protein Drinks for our full liquid phase are sweet, either chocolate or fruit sweet. Are there any savory options out there? A high-gram Protein Drink that tastes more like beef broth or something savory might make a welcome change after days of sticky sweet. Does that exist?

I've never tried em, but I've heard people rave about the click espresso and other flavors.

I liked the unjury chicken Soup and that says a lot since I am not a salty/savory person but this broth had quite a bit of flavour. Reminded me of Lipton's soup (in the envelope) so if you like that, you should like the Unjury brand.

I was also getting sick of the 'sweetness' since I am not drawn to sweet post-op. The only Protein shake I can get down right now if I need to is the Premier Protein line at costco (only comes in chocolate, I think) so other than that, all of my Protein sources are coming from food.

I dont drink Protein shakes - before you die, I'm 5 years banded, not sleeved and not post op. I dont like them, find them too sickly sweet, and if you read the labels, theyre often either a big hit of sugar or of artificial sweetener, neither of which I'm keen on consuming.

I often make an egg flip - just an egg, skim milk and a dash of vanilla. Its not savoury, but not very sweet and with a shake of nutmeg on top, I really like them for Breakfast. There's about 17 grams of Protein there and nothing artificial (I use real vanilla).

I know some people will freak at the thought of raw eggs, but I've never had an issue and I've had egg flips since I was tiny.

Jachut - hmm, do you blend the flips or just stir? Do you break the yolk? Do you think it would work with unflavored Protein powder mixed in? Is it best to drink them super cold? I'm not sleeved yet but I started this thread because just the idea of those sticky sweet jelly bullets ... *shudder*

This is interesting .. I have never heard of an egg flip before and my father mentioned this to me about a week ago. He said it's good. The idea of drinking a raw egg really makes my stomach flip :001_unsure: .. so I will have to pass. But I understand about the sweetness of the Protein Shakes. I find them awful and I used to like them as well so the majority of my protein intake comes from food. It's not always easy but I somehow manage it.

You blend them and you cant taste egg at all, that just adds some oomph and nutrition to the drink. It tastes mainly like milk and vanilla blended with some nutmeg on top.

egg flips are sort of traditional "sick food", the kind of thing your mum always makes you when you're ill or convalescing - a bit like chicken Soup. Its a habit of the 1970's that has kind of stuck with me.

I've been eating some butternut quash Soup with unflavored Protein added. Probably high in carbs but I am struggling to get any protein in and can't drink one more horrible Protein Shake

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
