I have consulted with my doctor, my nutritionist and many others who have had WLS and I'm so confused about a goal weight.

I'm 62 years young, 5'9" tall and 300 lbs. Some people say as you get older you should set a bit of a higher goal weight because you lose some weight as you age (when the heck is that going to start :) )

Is there any sort of set standard? I know this will sound rather foolish, but I'm so worried that I will not reach goal because I have made an unreasonable expectation of myself.

John

Look up your BMI that is a common way to determine what a healthy weight would be. Preop I wouldn't be overly stressed about my end result. As you get closer you will know better what looks and feels right to you. Good luck!

John - I think your concerns are common - the majority of us are here due to failed dieting attempts, I for one have never reached a goal I set myself beyond starting the diets in the first place. Yoyo'd up and down the scale yes, but not managed to attain that final placing!!

I think Wannlise is right, be guided by the healthy BMI figures. My surgeon gave me an idea of how much weight he thought I would loose. So i am going by that figure....but I think it'll also be a case of see how I feel when I get there (feels weird not typing 'IF I get there!!).

I must have been my goal weight at some point in my life on the way up the scales, but can't recall ever being there in my adult life....so its a learning curve for most of us.

Good luck

Kathy

You should shoot for a BMI between 22 and 25

I also did a google search on how to calculate your target weight based on your bone structure size. I had to measure my wrist, and based on the # of inches that my wrist was compared to my height, it figured if I were small, medium, or large boned. Then I could determine about where in the weight range I should be. Good luck to you!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
