Oatmeal and fiber question

Recommended Posts

I feel as i am able to down numerous Protein shakes, yogurt, sugar free pudding, sugar free Jello and popcicles, etc... and while i am full for about 5 minutes, it then just goes straight through me. Cottage cheese seems to help hold me over a little longer. It's been about 3 weeks since surgery and my GI doctor told me to experiment with some foods that i may be able to tolerate. Softer foods, but not liquids. I'm really craving oatmeal. I have sugar free oatmeal packets. Does anything think this is a safe food for me at this point? I'd have to measure it out so i don't go overboard (i LOVE oatmeal) but i think it would really hit the spot and take the hunger off for a while.

Anyone try oatmeal at 3 weeks out?? Also, are high Fiber foods bad right now? Filling, low calorie foods are supposed to be good, but i don't want anything that will swell too much and get stuck or cause vomiting. Any food suggestions? Sorry for posting so much guys this is just so new to me, and i am damn sick of yogurt and pudding!!! :(

Oatmeal does most of it's expanding when you make it so you are probably safe there. I am eating way more solid stuff now thanks to that lady the other day and it makes a huge difference. I would suggest making it as thick as possible, not runny, so it won't go straight through you... and also I would suggest adding in unflavored Protein Powder so you can get some Protein content in there! Be careful and try a little bit at first and see how it goes but I think it is a great idea.

Thankyou Christie! I'm so glad you ran into that lady- i bet you are too!! I'm ready to move on to more solids/real foods, just taking it on the safe side, slow bites, chew well, watch the portions, but i feel like im ready for that next big step- Quaker oats. lol! And yes, i was planning on adding in the Protein powder, you are on top of it!! :(

I started oatmeal at day 10. five days clear.... five days full... then I started oatmeal on my first day of mushies. mmmmmm it really hit the spot and make me feel satisfied and nourished like I hadnt felt in days. I get unprocessed oats... the kind that take 5 mins to cook because they are less processed. I cooked them for about 10 minutes in extra Water so they were really mushy. mmmmmmm enjoy!!!!!!

by the way jillian... I'm curious about your weight loss. I was low bmi also... not as low as you but still low. Anyway... I hit a stall at about 10 days out and when it had lasted 2 weeks I quit weighing myself because I was going absolutly crazy.

I can tell I've started loosing again but its real real slow. My cloths are looser... but not like massively.

Anyway..... I'll be curious to watch your progress. are you weighing? are you watching carbs or just eating healthy and letting the sleeve do its work?

Stacey- i lost about 10 lbs. But that was mostly due do to the recovery time when i couldn't eat a thing, even hardly drink. Now i've got a little fat to lose but not too much more weight, maybe 10 lbs. I don't really watch carbs, i just try to eat what my stomach will tolerate. I do get fat free and sugar free stuff, so nothing that sits hard on the stomach. I need carbs for my energy. If i go really low carb, i lose all my energy and feel awful. I know that the fat loss will come from the overall calorie reduction. I am drinking some energy drinks that make me feel wonderful.

I'm SO happy that i can have oatmeal! I am going to fix it for my next meal!! :)

Oh- and yes i quit losing. Actually i just weighed myself and i've gone up a pound :) I'm ready to go back to my low calorie/healthy lifestyle and let the sleeve do it's work like you said. I can't wait till i can have my vegetables back!! I'm guessing that will be months though

I loved vegies before surgery... especially broccoli. Now, not so much. I have to make myself eat them. I think I need to back up and try some softer vegies like peas or squash.

Broccoli is my favorite too. Do you know how long it takes until it's safe to start eating fiberous veggies like broccoli again, if they are cooked? Or just a salad with lettuce?

My instructions were soft diet till 6 weeks and then slowly start to introduce whatever foods I wanted. Broccoli was the first veggie I tried. It didn't cause any issues but I was only able to eat about 2 bites and it just didn't taste the same. Its a vegetable with a lot of volume. I may need to wait a little while longer.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
