Trying to exercise- odd side effect??

Recommended Posts

I officially have the energy and my calorie levels up where i feel well enough to exercise. I have been given the OK by my Doctor to do whatever exercise i did prior to surgery. I find that when i get on the elliptical, my throat starts burning. It's a very weird sensation. After about 6 minutes i have to stop. I used to be able to exercise for hours at a time. Could this be from eating too close to the time that i exercise? I do take Prevacid, once daily, perhaps i should take 2? It feels almost as if whatever is in my stomach is trying to come "up" when i exercise, although i don't do it vigorously at all.

It has gotten too hot out to walk and i've always used the elliptical for burning calories and keeping my muscle tone, so i'd like to stick with that machine, i'm just not sure how to do it yet and make it comfortable!

Any suggestions?

It definitely sounds like acid, I'm not sure what else would make your throat burn like that! But I'm not sure exactly what to tell you to try. Before surgery when I had a lot of acid I found that drinking a small glass of milk really helped it, perhaps you could try a small glass of milk before your workout.

I would also have to say it sounds like acid. I would try not eating before exercising to give your body enough time to process it and get rid of the acid. If that doesn't work then I would definately take an additional anacid.

I am going to begin exercising this week as I will hit 6 weeks out and my plan is to be able to drink while exercising--meaning at least 30-45 mins after my last food intake.

Good luck with drinking while exercising. I have no problems drinking fluids at all....until I start to exercise....I dont think I even get down 4oz. And before I was sleeved and exercised I would down a 32oz bottle of Water at the gym...that is the only thing I miss. I exercise pretty intense and I think I am breathing so hard that when I drink I am also taking in air into my stomach it is very uncomfortable.

I often seem to have a mild sore throat and have been diagnosed with "silent reflux" or (LPR) Laryngopharyngeal Reflux, it's stomach acid that rides up into the throat but not in surges like with GERD. Exercising can exasperate it and although I am NOT pleased with what the ENT has recommended and intend on consulting with a gastroenterologist for a second opinion and hopefully better prognosis, I have increased my PPI intake to 80 mgs of Protonix (40mg Am and 40 PM). I find papaya chewable digestive enzymes also help after eating anything. Maybe milk will help I don't know. The doctor suggested I buy some OTC acid blockers in addition to taking the PPI. So I bought Gaviscon chewables but they don't do much. Let us know how it goes with your throat if anything develops or subsides and what works for you.

Sounds weird but since i started eating no sugar added, reduced fat ice cream, the burning has completely gone away. I'm eating a little bowl of it at night and a little bowl in the morning and it completely controls the acid, especially at night when it used to wake me up and i felt nauseous from it.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
