Post Op Clothing Dilemmas

Recommended Posts

I remember asking probably 3 months ago (LOL) about shirts. I figured I would need smaller pants sooner than I would need smaller shirts.

WRONG! I need both.

Everything is hanging. I don't even want to spend much on clothes at thrift stores, but will if I have to. Would rather wait another month or two and then go shopping :lol0:

I used two tricks this past week.

Used clips at the office (not paper clips but those nifty fasteners??) to tighten my shirt in the back. Had to go to a memorial service and putting together an appropriate outfit with pants, etc that fit was a challenge. I did have to leave my jacket/blazer on which was fine.

Today - some of my favorite TShirts are soooo loose and hanging! Did the teen trick of using a hair tie to do a "pony tail" in the back of my tshirt to pull it snugger around the waist. and then tucked it up under the bottom of the fabric. Yep - will need to keep my jacket on, but heck! This is a holiday weekend in Seattle which means it is cold and rainy!! :lol0: And I could take the coat off. The teenagers do!

Anyone have any other ideas??

There is a sub-forum way at the bottom of the forums page for clothing exchange!! I plan to use that when I need some smaller stuff :svengo: :lol0: Also there's a website called freecycle you could check out! Congrats!

Used to be able to buy cute clips with a chain inbetween; seems we used those on dresses in junior high or high school. I may look at Claires to see if they still sell them somewhere.

I have a couple of people locally who are getting the majority of my clothes as they become too big.

I did try on a couple of medium sized tshirts (those darn snug ones the teen girls wear) and a pair of size 8 pants today! They were snug but they fit! Even zipped and buttoned! LOL

I am hoping to wait to buy new stuff until we go on vacation in July : )

I was at the flea mart today and I decided I would be using that route on the climb down in sizes. Its not best quality but can get some cheap basics to get by on. Even the new clothes are cheap.

good idea too! I went thru the first few sizes quickly and now have been in 10's for a few weeks. They are kinda loose but not quite ready for 8's yet.

Guest Stephanie

If you have tshirts that are too big, i have seen people cutting them down the side in slits and then tying the slits into knots. This makes the shirt smaller in width. You can search you tube for tshirt cutting and get more ideas.

I've now dropped a size . I did some much needed shopping at Kohls with the Memorial Day sales and a 15% coupon. I also got Kohl bucks to use in June and another 15% coupon in the mail. I figure I need 5 shirts for work and I can make two pairs of pants work. I imagine that it will get cheaper as I get smaller and have more sale racks to shop!

Keep up the great work ladies!

I thought my lapband was for life, right? So I gave away all of my large sized clothes with a fond "bon voyage" kiss, then my band slipped and had to be removed..... I was also told that it would be at least a year before I could re-band (I didn't, I went with the sleeve instead) so up crept, no, actually leapt my weight back on and I had to buy clothes all the way back up again. I fortunately didn't give up my smaller sizes so will be so happy to go back in them in the months to come. I can't tell you how much clothing I have stored now and my eyes roll when trying to determine what stage of the roller coaster they are, it's all a mess!!!!

I literally have those huge plastic bins from Walmart in my attic. they are marked 10-12-14-16-18 and 20. Pathetic..... I am almost into my 12s.

Talk about your yo yo

I have changed sizes a lot and I gave all my clothes away. Crap - then I had so little to wear. I can see now why it takes some self control b/c I can now fit in regular sizes and everything looks cute and I want to at least try it on, but thankfully I usually don't have time to do that anyway.

BUT what I've done has worked. I buy 'just enough' clothes at the beginning of the season just to get started, like always. Then I buy as needed after that, a shirt here and there.

The key to me is, I pretty much only buy things I can barely squeeze into. I really pay attention to the legs b/c this is where my pants look big after a few weeks. I buy pants with snug fitting legs now that I've learned that trick. Same with shirts - nothing oversized at all.

As for casual shirts and shorts, I do buy at costco or Sam's because the prices are so much less. Like half as much as other stores, including Target which I think is getting overpriced for what you get.

I only had one big clothing splurg, which I had to have for work for a special event. I do sorta regret it now b/c I overspent at the last minute. I have buyer's remorse but its too late. I gotta plan better.

I still have a tendency to want to buy things a little looser fitting, but if I make a mistake I take it back before I wear it as I usually realize it on the way home. It is hard to imagine always being able to wear smaller clothes, so the other day I brought home some jeans that I probably could wear a smaller size in so they are in the car to return today.

Shoe sizes have been a surprise as I've gone down a whole size. So that has been a bit of a problem. I need to buy a couple good pair sandals for summer...which I was not anticipating. I'll buy just enough for this summer since it may change again by next summer.

I am enjoying this process of shrinking all along the way and I think depriving myself of clothes that fit would not be fun. But I probably haven't bought this many clothes in a long long time. And really I haven't bought much. Just have nothing in the closet to fall back on.

I buy loads in charity shops and off ebay. It's good fun and you end up with your own distinctive look ;-)

More good ideas! thanks!

I had to buy something yesterday to wear to my son's graduation on Wednesday. I ended up at Walmart ... bought a size 8 pair of capris ($7) and several nicer tshirts ($3.5-$7). The shirts were all Med or Larges. Darn bust line is not getting smaller at all!!! LOL I also got a new pair of danskin workout capris and a matching tank top. Anything that was looser, I got in a medium. The tighter shirts I got large.

My teen daughter is very adamant that I will need a reduction. LOL Funny, as tight as these young girls want to wear their shirts and show off cleavage!! Not ok for mom tho! haha!

Stephanie ~ good idea about the slits! I am thinking that would be cute for summer!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
