Any Singers Who's had the VSG???

Recommended Posts

Okay...so I am EXTREMELY nervous. I've always been against any kind of weight loss surgery...but this past year...not sure what has changed my mind...but it has. I am a month away from surgery and although I've tried to read all details about it and listen to others...I'm STILL nervous. I am 32 years old and I have reached the heaviest I've ever been at 320 lbs. People say I carry my weight well...but I'm sick of hearing that. I want to be happy. One of my greatest concerns is that I am a vocalist. I do alot of performing and I don't know how my voice is going to be affected (if at all) after surgery. I surely don't want to lose it of course, because it is my source of income. Besides...I LOVE to do it! I've been reading alot of the threads and everyone's story is so inspiring. I just wanted to know if there are any singers out there and how they feel after surgery.

I'm also a vocalist (former music teacher, now I just sing at church) and I had trouble for about 6 weeks after surgery with a very sore throat, which meant I had virtually no head voice. Of course, I'm plagued with allergies and as soon as I feel a tickle in my throat, I lose my head voice for a good 2 weeks. That has been happening all my life! After I got over that, I have had no problems singing. I have a friend who is a voice instructor, and after her VSG, she had no issues with going to back to singing. I just have a weak voice, I guess! I think it just depends on the person.

Wow..that's great! So maybe I should just relax. I do notice the times I have lost weight before my voice is much stronger and my range is better...so I'm hoping after the surgery this will have same affect. My surgery date is the 29th of June and I have a HUGE concert here in Cincy on August 22nd...I'm hoping I'll be ok by then.

:thumbup1: Oh my! LOL! No I don't do that. I had to go back and double check and make sure it wasn't a typo! That is funny!

I'm not a professional in any capacity but have always loved singing. My voice is exactly the same now (10 days post op.) I didn't sing much the first few days because of all the internal muscle pain in the abdominal area, and your lungs can be weak for a while after being under anesthesia. REALLY be dilligent about the breathing thing they give you to practice with - my lungs were back to normal in a few days.

I am a professional singer and I am considering surgery. I am very interested in hearing about your experience. I wish you all the best in your journey.

I would just make sure that in at least the first three months post op you are taking excellent care of your throat by taking a ppi daily and ensuring that there is no acid reflux, that would be the only thing post op that I could see affecting your instrument. And yes you'll be fine at 8 weeks. You'll be a hottie with a naughty body!

I am hoping that since I have not had any real problems with acid reflux it will not be worse after surgery but, it appears from some of the posts here acid reflux can be a real issue afterward.

I had a very small issue with acid reflux about 2 years ago...so I'm hoping that it doesn't come back afterwards either....because it makes me so hoarse. Overall, I'm just keeping faith with it all. More of me is excited and anxious to get it over with than the other part of me being nervous...especially never having any kind of major surgery before.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
