Hi Everyone,

I am wondering if any of you could let me know how much time you were off of work after the surgery. I am worrying about time off......I am a Social Worker and am worried about my peeps while I am off.

Thanks for all of your wonderful advice. Looking so forward to sharing with all of you!!

Diann

I am pre- op but my surgeon told me 3 wks. I have heard of other people who had surgery on a Thursday and were back at work on Tuesday.

I have a boring desk job but I have short term disability and I want to take the time to heal properly and get used to my new slim stomach so I will probably take 3-4 weeks off.

I took 2 weeks and frankly it was too much. I would have done better if I had been at work. Sitting around waiting to "heal" is no fun.... too much free time that I couldn't fill with food (old habits die hard). I would have been fine to go back after 5 days. I was still a little sore and swollen but I would have been happier at work (and I don't really like my job). I can be pretty sedentary at work if I need to be. I wish I hadn't used all my time up.

Thats just me.......

Stacey

I think it is all a matter of how you recover. I am Day 6 post op and can't image going back to work today. I am still having bad gas pains. But It's getting better so time for me will probably be 2 weeks.

I was amazed at how quickly I was able to go back to work. I had my VSG on May 12th, my one week check up on May 19th, and returned to work full time on May 20th. Granted, I have an office job, so that makes it a little easier. My surgeon did give me a 15# weight limit until I see him on June 2nd. Since my job deals with sitting at a desk and doing a lot of data entry, I just made an attempt every hour our so to get up and take a 5 - 10 minute walk (of course, I had this okayed with my boss) and I think this really helped me in my recover and healing process. For me, getting back to my routine helped me stay focused. Sure, I was tired when I got home....but it felt so good to be productive!

I had surgery on Thursday, flew home on Sunday, went back to work on Monday. Didn't have any pain and was up moving around the office throughout the day. I was tired by about halfway thru the day, and went home a few days after 4-6 hours to take a nap. I am self employed so that was easy to do. I could have stayed all day tho if I was an employee : )

I was back to work in the same amount of time after my lap gall bladder surgery - which was more painful than the sleeve. I was also on vacation 3 weeks after a vag hysterectomy.

So - just depends on how you recover. For me, the sooner I get up and into real clothes, the better I feel.

I also want to save any time off for traveling : )

I am pre-op, but plan on taking at least two weeks off. When I return to work I will also have limited lifting instuctions. I work for the post office doing data entry, but am also required to lift 70 pounds if needed. I believe I will NOT be lifting 20 pounds for a while much less 70 pounds. Which will all be spelled out in my FMLA paperwork.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
