Does insurance cover psych eval?

Recommended Posts

I am new here and hoping my insurance will cover the sleeve. Right now I am going through the pre-certification list. I am seeing a nutritionist which I need to self-pay for since it is not covered. I was wondering what others experience was with your psych evaluation. Did your insurance cover it? Also, is it a one visit deal?

I have BCBS of Texas.

It typically depends on what you mental health coverage is. My company pays for a seperate mental health policy and my psych eval was covered I only had to pay the $25 co-pay for a in-network provider.

If your company offers a mental health policy then I would think it is is safe to assume that your psych eval will be covered.

I have BCBS Federal and of my visits to the dietician and my psych eval were covered. All I had to pay was the $20 co pay for the in-network provider. The dietician and psych eval for me was a one time thing. The psych eval was alot of paper work, which took me about a hour and a half to complete. The good thing was they sent me the paperwork before my appoinment. I hope this answers your question.

I have United Healthcare and they covered the psych eval (took one visit, was cleared for 2 visits), but they don't cover nutritionist consults. Luckily the WLS portion of my policy did not require the NUT consult so I opted not to do that since I couldn't seem to find time to fit it in. Now I'm at the point where I don't feel like I need it since there's so much info here and on other websites.

My psychiatrist billed my insurance for "an initial visit" so it was covered. There was nothing mentioned about bariatric surgery, because my ins. won't cover anything directly related to obesity until I get the preauthorization for surgery.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
