What's the deal with Greek Yogurt?

Recommended Posts

I decided to try out some Greek Yogurt since I always see people talking about it on here. I compared the nutritional content to that of the "normal" yogurt I eat (Stonyfield) and am confused...the Protein content is exactly the same. The only difference I can see (besides the consistency) is that the Greek Yogurt has WAY more saturated fat and therefore calories.

What is the advantage of eating Greek Yogurt? Thanks!

The one I use is Oikos which is actually made by Stonyfield.

The biggest difference is Sugar, Carbs, and Protein counts.

Those are the two that I found. It's apparently how the Greek yogurt is strained from what I've read, but I'm not positive.

I love Greek Yogurt but I think I like it so much because of the consistancy. But When I compared it to my other favority yogurt the Protein and calaries were very different in favor of the greek yogurt.

There are lots of brands...I compared and found that they are not all created equal. Some are high in carbs, others low in Protein. The one I eat has 24 grams of protein in 140 calories. This is far different than the Yoplait Light I used to eat...

Any of the ones with fruit are going to be higher in carbs because of the natural sugar in the fruit. I like the Chobani, they have fruit and this evaporated cane juice as a sweetener, but I like them and I need the carbs.

But, during the losing stage, it was the straight non-fat, plain flavored with sugar free stuff in them to keep the carb count low.

I have found that I fell in love with Greek Yogurt. Yes the flavored ones are higher in calories, sugars and carbs. I am big on taste and texture and can not eat anything that I remotely think will be nasty. But I have found a new way to enjoy this treat and get some great antioxidants in as well. Maybe this can help someone. I am very new to this eating healthy life as I am getting prepared for surgery, but here it goes:

I use a brand called CHOBANI fat free

80 cal

11g Protein

0 fat

I mix 2 splanda packs and mix a half cup of fresh berries (blackberries and raspberries). It is also yummy with just the splenda.

I second this. Greek yogurt -- GOOD Greek yogurt -- is a sleever's dream food. High in Protein, high in flavor and satiety, low in calories and carbs.

Unfortunately, a lot of brands are catching on to the Greek yogurt fad and, I think, just rebranding their regular yogurt as "Greek yogurt." I tried the Yoplait Greek yogurt (can't remember what it was called) and it was cloyingly, disgustingly sweet, as well as being high in calories and carbs, and mediocre in Protein. I switched back to the Oikos right away!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
