Von82b 0 Posted May 23, 2010 Is having a BMI over 40.0 enougt to qualify for bariatric surgery. I am getting the impression form people on other sites and YT video's that maybe that's not enough. I thought it was? Was anyone here denied with a BMI over 40 ?
educationrulz 18 Posted May 23, 2010 40 seems to be the standard. Surely that's an insurance issue.
SParkle 4 Posted May 24, 2010 Are you asking in general or for insurance? My surgeon likes BMi of 35 or over for the sleeve so I just qualify. Kathy
Stacy160 201 Posted May 24, 2010 Most insurance companies require a BMI of 40 or over, OR over 35 with co-morbidities. I was self-pay because my insurance policy specifically excludes anything weight-loss related, but after hanging around on WLS boards for 3 years I'd guess that at least half of all insured people get denied the first time around, but almost all of them eventually get approved although it may take a couple of appeals.
