From what I have been reading and what my surgeon mentioned, is that the sleeve prevents feeling hungry. Is this a permanent thing or does it slowly come back. He recommend the sleeve for me and like that idea.

I do not have an appt yet. I am just starting the process for the insurance. I am scheduled for my sleep study and stress test june 9 and 10. Then I go to the nutrionist, and then the 3 month thing before pre-approval. Can't wait till it is done. Ready to get my life back.

Hi Connie, and welcome.

I am almost 1 year out, and have not had any true hunger. I just know when I "need" to eat. For several months, I had to have an alarm on my cell phone go off every 3-4 hours to remind me to eat. I've heard mixed reviews on the hunger feeling coming back. Ghrelin, the hunger hormone, is also produced in other parts of the body so while the majority of sleeve patients have a significant decrease in hunger, it's not a guarantee that you won't have some hunger. Most that experience hunger, from what I have read, state that a very small amount of food (protein) satisfies them.

Best wishes on going through the steps to getting your sleeve. I love mine ! ! !

Sorry to tell you that hunger did NOT go away with my surgery. It's reduced, but not even close to gone. Since I eat so little at once, I find I'm ready to eat again 1 or 2 hours after a meal. The only difference is that now, the hunger is tolerable whereas before, hunger was an emergency. I can put it off now and of course I don't need much to satisfy it. Just being honest. I was very much looking forward to not being hungry so it's a little disappointing that it didn't go away. I still love my sleeve though. My weight loss is going slow but at least it's still going! Good luck with your journey!

Well I'm only 15 days out, but so far I've yet to feel hungry, and I'm eating (at MOST) 1/2 of the calories I was eating before. More like 1/3 or less.

Here's an example: I had forgotten to eat (when would I have done that before??) until 3:30, and did the math -- I'd consumed 280 calories all day long. I wasn't hungry at all, I just felt a little weak and suddenly remembered "oh yeah... food!"

So yes, your mileage may vary, but at the very least I think it's safe to say that your hunger will be significantly diminished, if not entirely removed.

Sounds frustrating! I don't feel too hungry unless I have waited a long time to eat. However, I do graze much of the day. I am the same as you - I can only eat a very small amount and then need to do it again.

I also wonder why I even bother to heat up my food ... by the time I finish a couple of ounces it is cold again! lol

I am averaging about 2 pounds a week and am totally fine with that. Better than it was before surgery! :redface1:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
