5 Days Post Op...HELP!!!

Recommended Posts

Okay...i guess someone forgot to tell me how swollen and sore my belly was gonna be after surgery. I've lost pounds but my stomach looks and feels pregnant...LOL!! Wondering how many days for the swelling to go down....meanwhile i am having trouble getting more than 30 grams of Protein in a day...is that okay for now cause i can't seem to stuff in anymore protein shakes...ugh!! I actually feel great unless i am driving or bending over...so i'm trying to avoid those two activities as much as possible!!

Well, of course, your doctor should be your first source of information, BUT at this phase, you should definitely focus on hydration more than protein. You won't get deficient enough fast enough to get in trouble, whereas dehydration can land you in the ER pretty quick.

As to the swelling, everyone heals differently, but I really turned a corner around 6-7 days out. Now (11 days) my stomach is barely tender at all.

I was really swollen after surgery. The pants I wore to the hospital were TOO SMALL to wear home. My belly was hard and "pregnant" for about 10 days. I felt great... just swollen.

I hope it gets better soon

yep it was a good 10 days for me too...tummy just felt all bloated and swollen. It didn't hurt...it was just...there!

My docs office told me not to worry about getting in all of my Protein right away that I had to build up to it. They were definitely more concerned with me staying hydrated.

It'll get better and easier...you'll see. I think 30g a day at 5 days is great!

I too am 5 days out and was wondering about the swollen belly! It's getting better each day, but WOW, I never expected that. Did everybody gain weight after surgery?? I, like an idiot, asked to get on the scales before I left the hospital. The nurses all told me that I didn't want to....but I insisted. Heck, I'd been on a pre-op diet for 2 weeks and clear, no carb fluids since the day before surgery, certainly I should weigh less...right! I gained 12 pounds!!!! I know it makes sense with all the fluids and swelling, but seriously. I haven't weight myself since, but I plan on doing it tonight.

Lynette...that's perfectly normal too...

It doesn't happen to everyone...but it happens to most I think.

I weighed 13 lbs more when I came home than I did when I went in.

Because I had read about that often where people gained in the hospital due to all the fluids they pump into you...I wasn't worried about it all.

Thanks for the great responses...somehow i am down 13lbs (inc about 8 i lost on pre op diet) but it sure didn't come off my belly!! My sister just brought me some of her maternity shorts because we are going the beach next week and I want something stretchy..LOL!!! It is gonna be a very low key relaxing trip and hopefully when i get back I won't feel pregnant anymore!!!

Just got home from the hospital yesterday. I know what you mean by the swelling. That is normal for surgery. Even my hands are swollen. They gave me a pneumonia shot prior to discharge and now I have been having fever and chills. Fever is low grade 99-100. Guess I'll call the office today and let them know. I drank as much as I could yesterday and I'm sipping on some crystal light right now. I'm thinking the fever is due to the pneumonia vaccine since it is so low.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
