Mommydog14 1 Posted May 16, 2010 I was sleeved on May 11th by Dr. Aceves. Everything went well and I really feel pretty good. Yesterday was my first full day back at home, and I kept records of my Fluid and Protein intake. The Dr. wants me to aim for 70 grams of protein a day and 64 ounces of fluids. However, I am not supposed to sip more than 2 ounces of fluid in any 15 minute period. I am on clear fluids for 10 days, and then can go to full fliuds if I tolerate phase 1. Here's my question: I am having diffulty adhereing to the 2 ounces in 15 minute requirement. I have trouble drinking that slowly, and my stomach doen't seem to protest if I drink more quickly. although I was able to consume the required quantity of liquids, my best efforts only netted 45 grams of protein. Quite frankly, the things I've tried taste terrible to me. i have Unjury unflavored and strawberry sorbet which gives me the most bang for my buck protein wise, but I don't like the taste. Kellogg's protein Water is ok, but with only 5 grams of protein, it's nearly not worth it. Any suggestions would be appreciated Deborah
lmmore 0 Posted May 16, 2010 I drink the Isopure pre-made drink. It's like a tart Kool Aid, you can buy at GNC. 40 Grams a bottle, zero carbs. I drink half a bottle a day. I also have Pure Protein Premade Frosty Chocalte shake. 35 grams of protein 4 g carbs. I heat it in the morning and it's just like hot cocoa. Between these two drinks i get 55 g of protein, before I even start eating. Best of luck
pnw218 14 Posted May 16, 2010 My fav is the Premier chocolate Protein premade shake, I buy it at costco. It has 30 grams of protein. I do at least one and often two of them every day and pretty much takes care of my protein for the day with only 5 carbs each.
lwat80 0 Posted May 16, 2010 I am 5 days post op. I am also having problems with Protein. Isopure is horrid, and makes me want to hurl when I taste it. I bought Muscle Milk, and that is a little better but gives me diahreah. So far only getting about 10 grams of protien in a day. But my doctor did not give me restrictions on Water intake. In fact, I have caught myself gulping water! (And yes! It hurts sometimes) I am facing "head hunger". I want some refried Beans and cheese really bad. I want some potato Soup really bad. I still cant stomach a protien shake and I want to eat these things. I also want a mcdonalds hamburger. Just to chew up and spit out, not to swallow. God Im a fat girl at heart

God Im a fat girl at heart As soon as I over the initial surgery, I was ready for something more substantial. I had yogurt on the flight home - 3 days post op. I didn't go crazy but did move to thicker foods the first week. For me, I needed more than Clear Liquids to feel better. I did the premade shakes (Atkins, Nutrilite, Premier), cottage cheese, potato soup, mashed potatoes. I tried a couple of Protein powders and thot they were horrid. I tried mixing them into my hot farina Cereal in the morning. Not great, even with baby fruit added in for taste. A nurse who had surgery at the same time, wrote to me that the drs she worked with said anything mushy and tolerated was ok. I did stay away from crunchy, seeds, etc. Have you seen this link yet? http://www.cornellweightlosssurgery.org/pdf/dietary_guidelines_sleeve_gastrectomy.pdf It is a difficult adjustment; the entire experience has been harder for me mentally than physically. I crave Wendy's tho, not McD's! lol It will get easier
Oregondaisy 2,021 Posted May 17, 2010 Deborah, The 10 day clear liquid phase is very hard. There is no doubt about it that it's not easy. A lot of people just give up trying to get all their Protein in if they can't drink Isopure. I used unflavored Protein powder and put it into anything that I could find that was sugar free. I didn't have any trouble drinking either. I had to force myself to go slowly. It's more important not to get dehydrated right now than it is to get that Protein in. After the 10 days is up, you can try other things. Go to the food section of this board and find the thread "places to order samples" A lot of people like the nectar samples better than the milky Protein Powder. You're going to need something for when you can get on full liquids, so order some samples of something now. There is also a "Rate your protein powders" or something like that. Oregondaisy 2,021 Posted May 17, 2010 PNW, are you telling her to go against her doctors orders and advance her diet when her doctor clearly told her to stay on Clear Liquids for 10 days?
imagine.dream.inspire 0 Posted May 17, 2010 After day 5 you can move on to thin liquids which includes flavored Protein shakes made with flavored Protein powders and Water NO MILK. That should help you get in more protein without forcing down the awful unflavored protein. I also was able to drink a lot more liquids. Gaby mentioned to me that it was okay to do as long as I was not gulping. She said that liquids go right through you. I still took it easy and did my best to sip slowly but usually consumed double. Lori21769 14 Posted May 17, 2010 I LOVE the BSN Protein powders. You can order at www.Netrition.com. They are called Lean Desserts and come in flavors like; chocolate coconut candy bar, banana cream pie, banana nut bread. They dissolve well in Water and two scoops with 8 oz of water is 42 gms of protein. I also like the BE caramel latte and cinnamon cappaccino protein powders that you mix with coffee. You can order those from www.bariatriceating.com. One scoop in coffee gives you 35 gms of protein.

shasta 0 Posted May 24, 2010 I was told by my dr that you really want to focus more on hydration the first week, then work up to the 70 grams in the second week. I use nectar by Syntrax. No carbs, no fat. The Fruit Drinks are really really good, taste almost like a juice. You can 23 grams in 8 0z. Another trick I found when I moved to yogurt, was to actually mix it with the greek or carbmaster yogurt, and it is supper yummy, packed full of protien. My surgery was on the 12th, and I am having no problems getting it in.
