Period during my surgery date, bad?

Recommended Posts

I think lots of things affect your period post-surgery including meds, anaesthesia, blood thinners and 'most' likely the radical changes your diet has undergone recently. Mine are still erratic at times and it could be pre-menopause for me (I'm 44) but I do know that lots of people on here report changes post-op so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

this makes absolutely no difference for surgery or any type. I myself personally have had 2 surgeries with my period-no big deal. if it makes you feel better ask your surgeon before you go in, don't be embarrassed, because the whole OR room will see you naked anyway!!! it is a normal part of life, don't worry about small stuff like that....

I unexpectedly started my period the day before surgery. Just don't wear a tampon and let them know and they will give you some disposable undies and pads. It's no big deal at all to them.

I asked my doctor several times if I need to stop taking my BC and he said that it would be fine. I could even take it on the day of surgery and only take a little sip of Water, if necessary. My period is supposed to start 4 days after surgery, but I was thinking of not taking the sugar pills and just starting a new pack right away. I've done it before and never had problems, but I also wasn't on medication for surgery. Sigh. Guess that's another question I'll have to ask him.

I just wanted to give a quick response here. I did once have a surgery while on my Pd. In fact it was my Lap Band surgery.

Never again will I do that. :scared0:

I specifically scheduled my surgery when I knew I would definitely not be on my time.

Good luck!!!

Souldancer, mine went all kinds of weird postop, so I'm sure it's just the effects of surgery/diet/hormones that make it late/different. I am almost 8 weeks postop and back to normal now.

Okay okay...I just realized tonight as I was taking my birth control pill that my surgery date (June 1st) falls on the 3rd-ish day of my period. Since I am on birth control my period is only about 3-4 days and it is never heavy. I am just wondering if it is alright to undergo surgery while menstruating? I really don't want to postpone the surgery. Was anyone else on their period during your surgery?

I'm not TOO worried about it, but I just would like to know if anyone went through it. Any input would be greatly appreciated of course!

Lori

I was on the very last day of my period the day of my surgery (mostly spotting, if that)...so they gave me some special undies and a huge pad to wear during the surgery.

Edited by sleeve 4 me

i was on day 3 when i had my surgery. the super strechy panties were my friend. i just wore pads, huge ones,lol...but i never went through any discomfort, walked to the bathroom to take care of myself and all. but now...3 weeks post-op i am STILL on my cycle. no pain or anything, just bleeding away. i told myself that becauseof all the body has to deal with it would be normal, so i'll give it another week or so and then i'll make an appt to be seen at my obgyn.

overall- no worries to be on it during surgery, the nurses will help ya :wink0:

:oA friend just had bypass surgery two months ago and she started her period the day after. She wasn't suppose to start for another 10days or so. She was told by the nurses at the hospital that its very common for that to happen. She wished would have known earlier since she has very BAD periods... it kept her in the hospital longer. I am glad she clued me in

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
