What is up with me? I am stuffing face like there is no next week (T-minus 6 and counting). Why am I trying to destroy myself here? If I have no will power now, what about after the sleeve? Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately in my case) I was not required a pre-op diet.

Not to sound too dramatic but I am disgusted with my behavior. I try to rationalize by saying "this is my final hurray", or "this is my last supper". Today, I went to lunch, a buffet, with an old friend that I don't expect to be around much longer. He has in fact had surgery from past injuries in an airplane crash that removed more than half his stomach giving him a virtual sleeve gastrectomy. He is wilting away, and I wanted to see him before my surgery. But, I digress, is it normal to do that to yourself pre-surgical? Did any of you go out in a moment of weakness and stuff face knowing what you were about to face? Thanks Jerry

Jerry, I posted about the same thing not too long ago. Before hubby and I even got our surgery dates, just knowing we had decided to do the surgery we started pigging out. It got better for a while but now that I know my surgery is in 6 days (May 20th) I'm doing it again. Everyone chimed in when I posted to say they went through this too. I talked to my aunt who had gastric bypass in 1999 and she went through that too. If it encourages you at all, she is still thin and has still kept off her weight, despite 'no self control' prior to surgery. Same with my friend Brandy, she told me she went through that too, and she has kept off more than 100 lbs for 7 years now.

I think we all go through this because if we had lots of self control, we wouldn't get to the point of needing surgery. I don't believe it means you won't be able to change!! If you are really feeling bad, maybe try eating really healthy for Breakfast and lunch and Snacks, and having 'goodbye' pig out meals at dinner (or whichever meal you want but you know what I mean.) It may not be the best, but at least you're not going all out for every single thing you eat. I think this is a lot like saying goodbye to a friend, it's familiar, it's what we know. You need to go through that grieving process. Believe in yourself, you will be able to change and this is just part of that process. :)

Nicely put Christie, and ty. I too have lost control! lol

I know that it's best to change what I can before surgery, and maybe I am just rationalizing to suit myself. But, I have to do Clear liquids for 1 week pre-op, so I am having what I want now. Saying goodbye to all my faves.

To be honest, it's given me some peace. I was a mess just after I got my date as I felt I was going to lose my best friend. Now, as I have each meal, I savor it! But, when I'm done that's it. I'm not having my fave desert everyday because I'm near surgery, I just had it once. Just like my other faves.

I'm not going to try to fool anyone, lol. My last dinner before Clear Liquids, I'm going to a place where I always eat too much. I mean there is no way I'm having hamburger helper as my last meal.:)

Yes... I posted the same question a few weeks back. I went through extream seperation anxiety and had to eat everything in sight before my pre op diet started.

It seems that a lot of people do that.

I didn't.

I wanted a head start on my new life and wanted to go ahead and start making those changes I knew I needed to make..even before I had to start on the pre-op diet.

I lost 24 lbs before my surgery...I just figured that was that much less I had to lose!

I also know I'll be able to have all my favorite foods again one day in moderation so it's not like you're saying goodbye to them forever.

But yeah...seems to be quite normal.

I think I am just ABnormal...lol

I started my pre-op diet and never turned back. However, the weeks before that I ate whatever, whenever. food was my everything. I used to live to eat, now I eat to live. I do not deprive myself of anything. If I want something sweet, I have a bite or two same with all my other faves! I have never taken the position that I'll never get to have those things again, because if I did I would be setting myself up for failure. I know what my limits are, I listen to my very tiny tummy and stop. In the past my head would interfere, telling me to get more! But my stomach is in charge now! You will do fine. As you heal, find what works for you. I am 7 weeks post op and down 34 pounds. Best of luck!

im doing the same thing. Having a very hard time sticking to my pre-op diet. I am so hungry. I caved in and ate 4 packs of oatmeal last night and several sugar free fudge bars. I have surgery monday. The only thing i can think of is to drink mineral oil and take an extra laxative and hope it'll move through me quicker. Sunday is traveling day so i wont have to worry about eating, food wont be available or in reach. But this entire past week i KNOW i gained weight, ive eaten more than ever. Stress is a killer.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
