HELP! I don't know what to do.

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for the 21st which is next Friday. Today I have started feeling like I am coming down with a horrible cold my mom had last week. The reason I am worried is because I'm asthmatic and when I get sick I get "REALLY" sick and it takes me 3 times as long to get over something. I would hate to have to reschedule my surgery because of a cold. Any advise? Please help.

Hi Angie!

I am the same way when I get sick too!

I end up with bronchitis at least once a year!

I think if it were me I would probably postpone if I felt that I was coming down with a chest cold.

I am so sorry and I hope you get to feeling better real quick!!

I hope you don't have to postpone. I know how crazy the anticipation before surgery is. This is a big deal though and you sure want to give your body it's best chance at healing well. I would say keep you doctor posted and don't sugar coat it. He/she should help you decide.

Sorry... you must be so frustrated.

Lillie, I'm worried about this too because I'm prone to tonsillitis and sinus infections as a result of allergies. I know how anesthesiologists are and they don't like to sedate people who are congested or having breathing issues. I plan to talk to my surgeon about this a couple of weeks before surgery and ask for a prescription for some antibiotics in case I start coming down with something right before surgery. That way I won't have to try to get a last minute appointment and it'll be something the surgeon thinks is safe to take - as opposed to having another doc prescribe something. He may say no, but it won't hurt to ask. I've taken preventative antibiotics before surgery in the past so I know it's done. Even though it won't necessarily keep you from catching a cold, it might give your body the boost it needs to make it to surgery symptom free.

Thanks everyone... I am just so frusturated. I plan on seeing how I feel tomorrow and continue taking the Zircam I bought this morning that is suppose to speed up recovery time. If by tomorrow I am not feel better or can tell I am getting sick for a definate, I will make an immediate doctors appt. for some preventative or boosting antibotics.

Can you get some echinacea? I never believed that stuff worked until Caysen started intermediate school, and started bringin home big kid germs. I think I dodged a few bullets by taking it.

I've got my fingers crossed that you don't have to postpone.

This is probably real bad advice, but i would go with it, and then take antibiotics if I had to afterwords. Just think, it's a perfect time for chicken Soup

I was going to take some Echaneshia (however it's spelled) but my doctor instructed me to stop taking all herbs 2weeks before surgery. Today I am feeling ok so it hasn't progressed. I am hoping it is just allergies.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
