stcyt 15 Posted May 12, 2010 (edited) so.. I have just (as of today) moved into soft foods so its time to make some sort of comittment to an eating plan. I have never ever been able to do the low carb thing. I feel absolutly awful. maybe it will be easier with the sleeve, but its not really hunger that gets me... its that my brain feels like it might explode and I actually have cognative trouble. Difficulties tracking conversations etc.... Has anyone here ever done the old Weight Watcher Core Program? I'm thinking of trying that..... Its mostly about eating a low fat diet high Fiber in which all foods consumed have a high Water content and are not considered "trigger foods" Any thoughts? I'd definitely talk to them about that!
deletedsally 8 Posted May 12, 2010 I can't do extremely low carb diets either. I have trouble thinking clearly, insomnia, irritability, and mild depression when my carbs go too low. I have lost a lot of weight on the old Weight Watchers exchange program. I lost weight faster using a similar, but more restrictive diet from Diet Center. Carb intake is restricted, but not enough to throw you into ketosis. I've also used a Diet Power program that you can download to your computer, that will calculate calories, carbs, fat, Protein, etc...Just send me a message if you want more info. lmmore 0 Posted May 12, 2010 you will have more success if you stick to the Protein, but if you're going to feel awful, it isn't worth it. Talk to your nutritionist, may be if you stick to protein and simple carbs that will help your head. Best of luck.
stcyt 15 Posted May 12, 2010 I don't have a nut.... so I learn what I can from you guys and other research. Maybe I'll try the low carb thing. It could be a different experience with the sleeve. I just hate that feeling, but I sure would like to get this weight off as quickly as possible.
wannalise 16 Posted May 14, 2010 Not everyone does the low carb thing, I think that if you get your Protein in first and make good choices beyond that you will do just fine.
Catyroses 1 Posted May 14, 2010 My nutritionist has a straightforward formula: Protein first. Then fruits and vegetables. If there's room after that, then starches/grains. Simple, right?
thinoneday 445 Posted May 14, 2010 I am 5 months out and eat a variety of everything. . .your body will definately let you know what it likes and what it doesn't like. . . for example for me bread and tortillas are definately out unless it's toasted VERY well (almost burnt) otherwise forget it, big time pain. . . also certain veggies don't agree with me, broccoli, green peas, corn and cabbage. . .big time sliming and pain. . . cake, ice cream, chocolate, dried fruit and raw fruit, no go. . . sliming and pain. . . so you will learn in time what you can handle and what you can't handle. . .the thing is you are still not eating as much as you used to and that is the overall idea right? Good luck!
HEARTONMYSLEEVE 1 Posted May 14, 2010 Styct, I don't eat strictly low carb. I don't know about you but I didn't have this surgery so I could continue stressing over calorie and carb counts. That being said I still do follow the rules to the best of my abilities. I try to eat all my Protein first. I wait an hour after I eat to drink. It is a funny thing my body has done to me though. I don't really like a lot of the simple carbs anymore. My husband has made roasted chicken and potatoes and when I try to eat the potatoes they don't taste the same anymore or they don't taste as good as I remember. It is totally weird its like I put them in my mouth and chew and they just are not appealing anymore. I told someone that and they thought it was sad and I guess if I hadn't had the surgery it would be but its not like that its as if my brain has switched off my potato loving button. But my doctor actually wants us to have three servings of dairy a day, either yogurt or milk and both yogurt and milk have carbs. Plus, one serving of a complex carb a day. So I guess my doctor's diet isn't strictly low carb. I have lost 26 pounds in 5 weeks which for me is fast enough. I think if my weight loss started to slow down I might consider being more strict on myself. I think just follow the rules and don't stress over it. Plus if your stressed about the diet your own you might hold fat. Stress is known to cause weight gain.
stcyt 15 Posted May 14, 2010 (edited) Thanks for the comments guys. It really helps. I also had the surgery so that I could be free from the obsessive dieting that was ruling my life. I like the Protein first philosophy. I guess I was worried because I'm in the midst of the dreaded 3 week stall. I know it will pass... I was just starting to slip into my old thinking patterns re: I have to go on a diet. Thanks Guys Stacey Edited May 14, 2010 by stcyt
LAN2k 18 Posted May 14, 2010 I agree and as per my surgeon, and the nutritionist I consulted with twice, the rule for the sleeve is "protein first, then vegetables, then fruit or anything else..." Unless your taking in unhealthy refined sugary carbohydrates you should fill up sufficiently by following that protocol and allowing yourself enough healthy carbs (sleeve permitting), to take the edge off.
