Question about first day home

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to plan things out and was wondering how the first day home was for everyone. I live alone and was wondering if I really need someone there those first few days when I get home. Did you find that you had to have someone there to help do things, or was it just nice to have someone there?

If I really don't have to have someone stay with me I would prefer not to...I know I won't be much fun! :o

Being a very independable person, I didn't need anyone, however, my hubbie and daughter where at home . . . I came home and carried on like normal. . but then of course this having been my 18th major surgery I knew what my limitations were and what i could do. . .so in other words, you do what you think you can do, if you have a really low threshold to pain and movement, maybe you need someone, if you are independant and can do a lot by yourself and know how to control your pain, you'll be ok. . remember not to lift heavy things, don't do any heavy housework, follow the doctor's orders and you'll be fine. . . good luck

You can probably get by on your own...but it sure is nice to not have to get up when you're resting comfortably.

My hubby's recliner is where I parked my butt...that not laying flat and yet not sitting straight up is how I was most comfortable. I got up to do my walking but other than that..that first day was just rest and he fetched me drinks, and Jello, etc.

I could have gotten by on my own, but with the abs so sore the firs 2-3 days, it sure was nice to be able to say "Hey honey... can you grab me a popsicle while you're up?" :o

I agree ... you can do it on your own, but having someone with you really helps. I would suggest keeping Water bottles and allowable foods within close reach so that you don't have to move more than you need to (remember - you still need to rest, sip, walk). If you have a recliner, it really does help with getting up and down.

If you are going to be alone, but sure to have a writing pad by your medicines - you will need to keep close tabs on when you took your medicines. You don't want to over- or under-dose while you are resting/napping.

It wasn't because of any of my physical needs that I liked having people around, but for my emotional and mental needs. It was good to talk about my feelings and know that I could get through the rough few days. I was in no pain, but did have some nausea and it was nice to have a Mom who was willing to run get me a variety of popsicles.

you'll probably know within 12 hrs of your surgery, I came home the next day. I didn't need anyone but my hubby was here outside on the tractor. A recliner is wonderful the first few days. Better safe than sorry tho in case something happened and you couldn't act for yourself. Carla

I agree with others. I think that you can manage on your own but it is nicer when someone is around to help. I got tired a lot throughout the day and sometimes it was easier for someone to get things I needed. I could have done it on my own but it was really taxing on my energy.

If you can have someone stay for a couple of days to help you. Everyone here is spot on. You can do, but you would be more comforatable if you can have someone to help a little bit.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
