Question about energy

Recommended Posts

For those who have been sleeved after your initial recovery from the surgery and subsequent weight loss did you start finding you had more energy for exercise or do you think just the motivation from knowing your going to lose finally give you that desire to start moving more.

It's not that I am lazy by any means I go go go constantly. I just left my job of four years to help out my grandma (my grandpa died the day after christmas) and I am helping run her errands, my errands, cleaning her house, cleaning my house, doing her yard and doing my yard plus I have a hubby and two children.

I just feel at this point like my efforts are futile I never seem to get lower then a certain point before I just say screw it and stop the routine. I can't stand walking on a treamill thinking of the million things I would rather be or should be doing. My doc thinks I am ADD. I think I am just a busy mom lol.

So what I am really hoping that it will be like every time a start a new diet that i get that motivation and determination and since I hope to be seeing results it will keep me on the right track? Or am I just wishful thinking and the same work out demons that haunt me will be on my shoulder after surgery...please anyone good or bad let me know how it worked out for you.

I tried going back to the gym a month out of surgery... I shouldn't say "tried," I DID go back, but noticed a definite difference. It took me much longer to work back up to my previous level on the elliptical--actually that's not true, I never did. I'd been up to an hour before I quit going (several months before surgery) and it only took me a couple of weeks to get there. After surgery, 3 weeks after going back to the gym, I was still only up to about 45 minutes and struggling to make it that far.

As far as overall energy goes, it was great for the first 3-4 weeks then the fatigue set in and I was really tired for a couple of months. Then at the 3-month mark (April 25th), suddenly I felt like my old self, and I've been getting back to working out more regularly, although at home either walking outside or inside walking and running on the treadmill. I think it's the combination of getting over the physical affects of the surgery itself, and being down 40 lbs, making exercise so much easier and enjoyable.

And yeah... seeing that scale go down and loving the feeling of working out and dripping sweat and feeling so energized and fresh and clean after a shower, it's all motivating! I'm bummed on my work days that I can't do it (working 6:30am - 7:30pm... no thanks lol) even though I can usually fit a quick treadmill session in at work or take a walk outside during the middle of the day.

Boy am I rambling, I don't even remember what your original question was. Should have waited til the coffee kicked in! :o Anyway, I hope somewhere in there I managed to get to what you were looking for LOL.

I really hate walking, treadmills, and ellipticals. I think all of those are so boring and mundane that I never stick with it. Once I was released to work out, I did walk more, and started doing some ab/core workouts. About 2 months later, I joined the Y and started a weight lifting routine, and 1 day of heavy cardio.

I found motivation because what I was doing held my interest. I did have more energy, but I also saw results. My clothes were fitting better, my body felt good, and I loved going to the gym. I love Hip Hop Abs videos and that was my cardio for the day. I tried Spinning, and I honestly believe that routine was invented by the devil himself. Zumba was a blast, and I enjoyed it when I went. In February, I had my gallbladder removed. I wasn't allowed to work out for 6 weeks so I canceled my Y membership and that's when the motivation kind of went out the window. I just recently started doing a little more working out at home. I have the Wii active by EA sports, and it holds my interest. We have weights, and a bench in the garage with attachments that I could use, but I hate it.

For me, now that I am below goal, and just living life, I've lost all my motivation to work out. I'm out of shape, and need to build more muscle mass to tone. I just can't get into a routine. So, I know that doesn't give you much hope, but it's been my experience. I have to really enjoy whatever I am doing to stick with it. I've done Hip Hop abs for years, and it's the one thing I always go back to doing. I can stick with it, and I don't feel like I'm working out. The key for me is to do what I like and something that holds my attention for more than 10 minutes so I don't start thinking about the laundry that needs to be done, or the errands that need to be ran.

I like you, never worked out, besides chasing kids and running errands. Then in February my work offered a Zumba class. That was it, i was hooked. I started 1 day a week, then in March they added another day. I joined a gym to get more classes, I am now up to 4 times a week. I burn the average of 600 calories per session, but the best part is I LOVE IT! It is not like you are working out, you are dancing around and having fun.

I think the key to sticking to anything is doing something you LOVE and that you have fun. Before Zumba, I hadn't worked out since I was a cheerleader in HS (20 years ago). At first it was HARD, having twins 3 years ago, the bladder left a lot to be desired, but now 4 months later, no problem. My dr said I am building muscle and the bladder is is fixing itself!

If you can, find a class in your area that you can do a drop in, they are usually $10, try it! Go slow at your pace, and feel the fun!

Ok off my Zumba soapbox!

I think that is the problem mostly...boredom. I was a high school athlete and played sports year round and loved it but of course playing a game and practicing is much more interteresting then standing and running on a treadmill or the eliptical. I come from an active outdoor type family. I love to be outside I just dont want to be indoors reading a meter on a machine.

They had a Zumba presentation last year at a health fair through my job. It looked like fun. I actually think I would really like it. That is a great suggestion and I will give that hip hop abs video a try. I just bought the brazillian butt lift workout set from an infomercial and I gave it to my sister lol (that workout will kill a person :o . I am going to call and find out the Zumba info at the gym.

I am also hoping that if a drop a few pounds it wont feel like I am pulling a trailer behind me while i try to run! LOL

Thanks again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
