Have band need revision to sleeve and have questions about Aetna approval process

Recommended Posts

I have had my band for 2 years which was self pay and am needing a revision to a sleeve and now I have Aetna. I had my sleep study last week with no sleep apnea and my endoscopy last week with Dr. Kim, he said I have a slipped band which has been empty for weeks. His office submitted everything to the insurance today and said we will have to wait to hear from them. Has anybody else gone throught these steps with insurance, how long does it usually take to get an approval or denial?

Every Aetna policy is different. You should call the number on back of your id card to ask your specific questions. I have Aetna through AT&T and there are no limits in the policy for bariatric surgeries. I am in the beginning stages of band to sleeve revision. However, even though an insurance company may say they cover the process, there have been times when, after surgery, the insurance company refuses to pay. That is why the doctor must put you through all the paces to dot the i and cross the t, to assure that insurance will pay and you will not be left holding a bag of debt. Be patient. It will happen in due time. My new sleeve surgeon is making me gain 20 pounds to assure insurance payment. Imagine that!!!! So with all the tests, dietitian, psychologist, etc, appointments, it will be about two months before a surgery date can be set. The good news is that he removed all the Fluid from the band. I have thrown up at least once a day and sometimes more for the past four years. I will be so very very happy to get this band removed! Good luck to you as well.

I have Aetna and am being revised from a band to a sleeve. I have been approved with no pre requisites, but my case may be different from yours. I didn't have to go to any classes but I was going anyway as I had heard that they require people to do 3 mos with a nutritionist. Anyway, my doctor sent off for approval and next thing you know I get a letter and a call telling me that I have been approved. I meet with my doctor next week to talk about the surgery.

Lucky you! I wish I could get it today! However, I also have to quit smoking or the doctor won't do the surgery at all. He says smokers heal less quickly and the only two leaks he's ever experienced were in smokers. I need to quit anyway. Have bought a stop smoking aid and set a quit date.

question re: your aetna approval for revision --- did you have a upper GI that showed band issues -- or did doc just submit with his determination that you needed a revision to the sleeve? I am trying to collect all my info so I can be prepared for the doc on July 7th

I don't know if you are referring to me but I had an upper GI back in 2009 and in 2008. I was having band slippage issues. I'm not sure what they sent it though. I was simply told that Aetna requested that my medical records be submitted so they could make a determination as to whether I could have the surgery.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
