I think we have had this discussion recently but I can't find it.

Anyway....I'm curious how long all of your doctors said you have to wait to drink, and then what should you have? I know not beer because of the carbination. What about vodka and cranberry. I'm not a wine drinker.

Do we get drunk real fast???? :ack2:

Just wondering about everyones experience.

I waited until after 3 months.

I do drink wine, and the first time I drank it, yes I got buzzed, not drunk pretty quickly. Now, that has all changed. It's just like it was pre-op. I drink rum/cokes, and shots without issue at this point. I'm not a cranberry fan, but I have mixed coconut rum with some orange flavored crystal light without issue as well.

For some reason, my surgeon told me to avoid red wines to begin with. I didn't question his reasoning. I stick with Riesling or this funky German white wine that I love a lot. I have lost my taste for most red wines, and that makes me a sad panda.

I'm not a huge drinker... I'm getting to that age where the cons are starting to outweight the pros (hangover wise). I just like to do the friday night girl thing. My doc said I can pretty much do whatever I want pat 6weeks. I was just curious what others have said

I just waited because it was empty calories. I can't remember when I actually had my first drink. But, I know that on my September 15th follow up appt I did ask my surgeon this specifically. The only reason I remember the date is because it was my last follow up with him since he was set to deploy in October.

I went back to Vegas for a fun trip (as opposed to surgery) in late March. I checked with my surgeon and he was fine with a few glasses of wine while I was gone. I did push it a bit and had a couple of screwdrivers. It hit me fast and hard. From 0 to 60 almost immediately. But, it didn't last as long.

For some reason, I can drink the mixed drinks (esp. with OJ) a lot faster. I have a glass of wine here and there since, but make sure to count it in my 800 calories per day so that I don't overdue it.

Every year I host a meetup for a group of friends that come in from all over the country. We rent a house in New Orleans and just party for about 5 days.

I'm not going to overdo it but I know better than to think I'm going to survive the whole trip without drinking anything! LOL

Every year I host a meetup for a group of friends that come in from all over the country. We rent a house in New Orleans and just party for about 5 days.

I'm not going to overdo it but I know better than to think I'm going to survive the whole trip without drinking anything! LOL

Ahem, just saying, I'm only 4 hours east of New Orleans LOL LOL ! ! :ack2:

That absolutely sounds like a blast, I hope you have a good time.

I recently asked my doctor about this and the recommendation was NO BOOZE AT ALL. However, I was told that if I decide to have some, I should try to limit the frequency and stick to 1 drink as it will hit me harder. I was told to at least wait until I have gone through all the food phases.

I had the same advice as above .. abstaining is better because of the sugars in most alcoholic drinks. Sugar is not friendly with your new tummy. However, apparently most people can tolerate a little bit but going forward, the advice I was given was to really take it easy and you will have to - you will not be able to consume the same amount as before.

I am not a drinker at all. Last week a friend wanted to go and hear her friend play in a band. I decided to have a drink. I got completely drunk on one drink. I couldn't believe it. So yes, it does it hard and fast.

goodlife that sounds like an absolute blast. One of my fondest fun memories was of a few days in N.O. with a couple of my friends. Turned out to be one of those times when you hope that whatever happens in New Orleans, stays in New Orleans! LOL

Even though I introduced myself quite some time ago I haven't posted because I just haven't had anything to add.....LOL....however, I work in a winery so I'll try and shed light on the red wine issue:

Red wines contain higher amounts of a natural preservative called tannis

If ingested in excessive quantities, tannins inhibits the absorption of minerals such as Iron which may, if prolonged, lead to anemia. Tannic acid does not affect absorption of other trace minerals such as zinc, copper, and manganese.

Also coffee and tea have high amounts of tannic acid. Foods rich in Vitamin C help neutralize tannin's effects on Iron absorption. Adding lemon juice to tea will reduce the negative effect of tannins in iron absorption as well. Adding milk to coffee and tea has very little to no influence on the inhibitory effect of tannins. In sensitive individuals, a large intake of tannins may cause bowel irritation, kidney irritation, liver damage, irritation of the stomach and gastrointestinal pain.

My surgeon pointed out that some individuals develope a sensitivity to tannic acid after VSG and Bypass - hence the advice to stay away from red wine.

Have no idea if you wanted to know all that but there you go!:)
