Well, you asked the golden question. The answer depends on who you ask. Many people count a carb as a carb. Some don't count the Fiber because it's insoluble and passes right through you. Others don't count fiber or sugar alcohols. The last one is tricky because for some sugar alcohols cause a sugar spike like sugar and for others there is no spike - meaning no trigger for wanting more carbs.

Personally, I delete the fiber and sugar alcohols. I did just have a stall, but since I have been doing this all along, I really don't think that caused the stall. Like everything else, I believe you just have to experiment and find what works for you.

I counted them with the mindset that a carb is a carb. Grant it, I didn't really focus on carbs until I hit mushies, and found it super easy to avoid most carbs in general because I literally had little to no room for anything other than Protein foods.

Net carbs is when we subtract the dietary fiber from the carb count. I never bothered with all of that. The few carbs I was getting in were mainly from cheese, greek yogurt, and some Beans on the full liquid/mushy stage. Miracle Whip, and other Condiments I used had minimal carbs. Veggies and other healthy options I didn't fret over because I wasn't consuming more than literally 1-2 cut green Beans, or 1 broccoli floret.

For me, it was just too much "work" to sit there and figure net carbs vs. all carbs with fat and no fat, lite or reduced fat stuff. I guess you could say I was too lazy to worry about the science behind carbs, and stuck to the rules that were given to me by my nut.

Ok, when counting carbs....are we counting ALL carbs.......OR Carbs minus fiber content.......???

Thanks = D

When I did the Atkins diet prior to surgery, I always counted net carbs and I often stayed below 20 per day. Post op, I just count carbs. Too lazy to do the math. LOL And I am so used to eating at the lower level, that 40 seems like a breeze : )

Hope you are feeling better today! :biggrin2:

I count a carb as a carb. When I did Atkins a few years ago I did the whole net carb thing and it slowed my weight loss waaaay down and kicked me out of ketosis. I think that some people are sensitive to the net carbs and some aren't. Right now I'm keeping my total carb count under 30 and it's been working pretty well.

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
