first day transition from liquid to mushies

Recommended Posts

and it has been hard, do you just jump in with 3 meals and two Snacks? If I can't get the mushies in I guess I should stay on liquids...but my Doctor didnt have a full liquid stage. any words of wisdom?:thumbup1:

You can use full liquids if your body isn't ready for mushy foods. Don't force it or you'll feel worse.

I wasn't allowed Snacks. 4 meals a day consisting of 15 grams of Protein per meal per day. I couldn't get my Protein in until I hit mushies, but the 4 meal thing works.

The premade shakes worked best for me to insure the Protein. I used Atkins, Nutrilife and Premier. The Premier has 30 Protein compared to 15 for the other two. I liked the chocolate flavor in all three.

They are 11 oz and it would take me about 2 hours to drink it. In the beginning, I sometimes had two of those a day. I filled it around that with potato Soup, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, yogurt, SF chocolate pudding (LOL).

I was fortunate that I was able to go from clears to full to mushy by the end of the first week, and felt great.

Be cautious, use common sense and do what makes your stomach and you feel the best. Good Luck!!

Thanks guys, it just seemed as if you get in 2 oz liquid with no problem on the clears that it wouldnt be a problem on the mushies..but it is a big difference so I backed up and started on smoothies with greek yogurt and Soups blenderized, got to remember to get liquids in. I feel great even drove myself 2 hrs to see Doctor 8 days post op..yay for the grannies!!:001_smile:

Did you have any issues with your recovery since you weren't getting in your daily protein requirements?

I've struggled with protein. The shakes make me want to gag and are no longer an option. At this point I've given up on trying to find ways to get in protein. I've tried all sorts of powders as well. I am about to start the mushy stage and am really hoping that helps me to finally get in some protein. I just worry that I might have slowed down recovery by not meeting my protein requirements so far.

I had to go at it pretty slow. I am almost 6 weeks out and still am pretty careful. I do 2 Protein Shakes a day and then 3 soft meals, the greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and I did really well with scrambled eggs mixed with cottage cheese because they are super soft. It is crazy how different food goes down then liquids. Please just listen to your body and if it isn't ready for something hang on. You will get there. Also, my sleeve is different on different days. Some days things go down easily and some days my body is just more into liquids. Good luck and take it slow!

I probably didn't walk as much as others that got in there protein from the beginning. But, I could not tolerate any of the Protein drinks, mixes, even the ready to drink made me sick, or the taste was horrific.

When I first came home, I was pumped full of nutrients and calories through a pic line, and that gave me what I needed initially. I only went about 3 weeks without getting in my protein. Obviously, I didn't jump into 60 grams per day when I first hit mushies because restriction is extremely obvious on mushies. I had to work my way up. I took my Vitamins and supplements religiously, and wasn't willing to miss those.

Overall, I had a super slow recovery due to my complications, but I don't necessarily think going without the full 60grams of protein per day set me back anymore than I already was.

Hope that makes sense.

I bought the GNC unflavored whey protien and added a little to the broth and drank the k20 Water and it really helped me. It is totally unflavored and I heated the broth a little before adding. Good Luck! Carla

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
