Need help with appeal letter to BCBS Michigan

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I've been approved by BCBS Michigan for a bypass. My BMI was 40 when the paperwork was submitted, but is now 43. I am not comfortable with the bypass procedure and would like to get the sleeve. I have been denied the sleeve procedure and am filling a patient appeal. My surgeon will not write a letter on my behalf because I do not have particular co-morbidities.

Do any insurance companies cover the sleeve as a stand alone procedure for my BMI? Does anyone know how close (or not) we are to insurance companies covering it? Have any of you been successful in this type of appeal to your insurance co?

Thanks!

Aetna and UHC cover the sleeve as a stand alone for BMI 40+. I don't know about others.

Here are some links of appeal letters and stories to help guide you in getting your appeal letter together.

One common thing that a lot of appeals are won on is the fact that we can take NSAIDS. RNY patients can not due to the ulcer issue.

These appeal letters already have all the research links and articles cited within them. So you may have to copy and paste, change the wording around to fit your specific needs, but these are some pretty awesome letters.

Some of these patients have won some of them have not been able to.

I personally did not have to deal with this, but I try to give people dealing with appeals the information I've gathered over the last year or so.

When was the last time that you checked with BCBS? They have made some changes to their policies, and many are now covering VSG. I have BCBS of TX, and when I checked back in June '10, they only covered gastric banding and RnY. But, as of July 1, 2010, they now cover all of the surgeries, including the sleeve. Try giving them a call, if you haven't already.

Thanks Jeani, I did get your letter. That and other letters are a big help in compiling the info.

Eydie, I have BCBS of CA. I got my denial at the end of August. As I understand they are one of the last holdouts of the blue cross families. So I am sure as Murphy's law goes, as soon as I send all this in they will change their coverage policies LOL - :laugh0:

Thanks everyone! :001_tt2:

Tiffy- Girl you must be one organized cookie. You have so much info and it all seems to be organized and thoughtful. Seriously, I tried to remember where I read something about ghrelin today...I couldn't even find the damn thing lol.

I think they should start paying you on this website. :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
