Worried about post op diet

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I just had my phone consult with the nutritionist and now am a bit nervous about it. She talked about the calorie level post op being about 650 and I just can't imagine living on that amount.... do all you sleevers really live on calories per day?! I think a 1000 would be low enough.... always thought metabolism slowed down under 1000...

I feel like I want to take in more calories than my Dr is recommending....yikes....

I would love to know others thoughts on this..

Thanks,

judy

My recommendation was 600-800 calories, 60grams of Protein and no more than 30grams of carbs.

For the first couple of weeks, getting in 300-400 calories is nearly impossible. Most patients do feel fatigue. A lot of patients are on 5-14 days of Clear liquids and then progress onto full liquids and then onto mushy foods a couple weeks later. It just depends on what type of post-op diet they have you on.

I had a tough time hitting 600 calories until I got to mushies. I did not have any issue staying between the 600-800 calories through my losing phase, and actually had a difficult time getting up to a maintenance level of 1500-1800 calories per day. I have to eat sometimes 8 times a day to hit my calories so I don't lose anymore weight.

Once I hit mushies, I felt much better, and didn't feel horrible on 600-800 calories per day. I was losing consistently, and I think dropping the weight and my body surviving on my fat stores helped me feel energized.

Thanks Tiffy... again! So glad you take the time to answer all of us newbies.

It seems so scary now, but I guess that is why I need the surgery.. so i can keep my calories down...

Thanks,

Judy

I was scared too. I wondered how I would even make it home on the plane having nothing but a sip of apple juice in the morning. Pre surgery I would get shakey and almost panicky with low blood sugar if I didn't eat. I seriously couldn't function. I can't tell you how weird it is to eat 600 calories and feel just fine.... go hiking even.

You'll love it!!!!!

My surgery was last wednesday and I just signed up at myfitnesspal and put in what I had today.

I've had 415 calories, 27 g carbs, and 54 g of Protein.

I have no idea how it's going to work when I progress my diet.

It's rather confusing.

It was not hard at all to not eat on the post op diet. I had no desire to eat.

Most people feel like they have to force the liquids down so they don't get dehydrated.

There are still days now where nothing sounds good and I have

a Protein drink because I know I need the Protein. Today was a day like that.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
