I am Possibly Losing Muscle Mass! Help!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I get on a fancy scale monthly that reports Fat Free Mass such as muscle, bone and Water. Since last month I am down six pounds of FFM. I worried that it might be muscle that I am losing. Any advice would be appreciated. I am three months out and do an hour of walking/stationary bike a day. Do I need to up my Protein intake?

Of course, I'd ask your doctor/nutritionist.

But just from guessing, make sure you're getting enough Protein, make sure that the protein you're getting is good quality (whey isolates are best), and if you're cleared for exercise, try to add some resistance training in.

truthful it inevtaible not to lose some muscle mass that just the way it is regradless of what other people think even with all the Protein in the world your body can only use so much of it . don't give youself something else to stress about this thing is stressful enough i lift weights and exercise seven days a week and i'm donw 132 pounds did i lose some muscle? i'm sure i did. but now that i'm closer to goal i'm focusing more on building my muscles so point is you can always build and rebuild muscle.

I agree with Ryansgirl. I just read in a magazine recently (I think it was Self magazine) that when you lose weight it's 80% fat and 20% muscle, so losing some muscle is going to happen during weight loss.

Resistance training, weight lifting, floor exercises will all help build it back. As long as you're getting enough Protein in don't stress about it until you're closer to goal. Do what you can to keep it to a minimum, but don't worry too much. Your fancy-schmancy scale may not be a good thing - ha! Sometimes TOO much knowledge is dangerous...

Yep, we're all going to lose some muscle mass. You can minimize it but not avoid it. That's why I don't use any function on my fancy scale but weight.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
