CoachKK 0 Posted May 3, 2010 I keep reading that people are throwing up after surgery. From what my doctor said that would happen I ate to fast, too much, or drank to much. Is this usually what causes it or does it just happen. I'm a little worried about it. My surgery isn't until next week but still I'm already a little freaked out about what that would do to my stomach.
wannalise 16 Posted May 3, 2010 I always throw up when I'm sick of any kind. Its just how I've always been. If you are prone to nausea just be sure to request a presciption for phenegren or other anti nausea. I was also told by my surgeon that if you do vomit in the first little while it can be very irritating to the stomach and you need to not eat for several hours. Good luck! I think you'll be great. goodlife 3 Posted May 3, 2010 I've never been one to throw up easily. I haven't had any nausea whatsoever and haven't even come close to throwing up.
cwalker 12 Posted May 3, 2010 I'm still in Clear Liquids but I haven't thrown up once, no nausea what so ever, I worried about spasms and didn't have those either and am glad I didn't they sounded bad, It is hard to get in the 64 oz daily because it's so important to stay hydrated but I write down every oz.lol Your going to be fine, ask for the meds to help with the pain/nausea and it'll be over before you know it.:lol0: Carla
wannalise 16 Posted May 3, 2010 The recovery is so different for all of us. I hear some people talk about pain meds and I didn't bring any pain medication home with me and the one time I experienced pain was when I slept on my stomach my first night home. So, if you end up with any, all, or none of the things everyone experiences they are all really bearable. This is so worthwhile. I wouldn't trade it for anything. lmmore 0 Posted May 3, 2010 I have not thrown up, but have come close. Just this morning I had a scrambled egg and half a slice of toast. I guess i ate it too fast, and I got queasy. i sat up and walked around the house for a few minutes, and I was fine. What your doctor told you is kinda correct for me. If I eat too much, or too fast, I get queasy. Luckily I so far have managed not to vomit.
excited2lose 0 Posted May 4, 2010 I throw up about once every two weeks? I guess I am still learning what I can tolerate and how fast I can eat it. I am over 4 months out though and I don't think it damages my stomach in any way. It isn't even like a real vomit if you want me to get real about it. It is like the food just kind of falls back out of me. (Sorry if this is TMI) I don't know. I get mad at myself when it happens (because I feel like I did something wrong), but I don't worry about it.
Tiffykins 673 Posted May 4, 2010 I didn't throw up early out during that crucial healing period. Throwing up with the sleeve is so different than pre-op puking. For me, it's happened when I've taken that one "last" bit, and that one last bite creeps back up my esophagus, out of my mouth. No retching, gagging, heaving kind of vomiting. Sounds gross, but it's not horrific. I honestly hate to vomit. I would do anything to avoid puking pre-op, and I still do hate to throw up. I also found that if my body wasn't ready for something I'd get nauseated, and a little dry heavey if that makes sense.
wannalise 16 Posted May 4, 2010 I don't know if this is unique to me, but when my Multivitamin hits my stomach I get super nauseated. It stays that way for about 20-30minutes.
Tiffykins 673 Posted May 4, 2010 I don't know if this is unique to me, but when my multivitamin hits my stomach I get super nauseated. It stays that way for about 20-30minutes. Is it labeled to be taken with food? I had one multi a few years ago that were higher in Iron than some on the market, and it made me nauseous. I talked to the pharmacist, and she recommended eating right before or right after taking it. I ate right after taking it, and it resolved the nausea. wannalise 16 Posted May 4, 2010 I've done both. I have the Bariatric Advantage chewables. If I suck on them like lozenges and only small amounts get to my stomach at a time then I do okay. I even called Dr. A's office to see maybe if I could switch to my old pill kind of multi's and tried that for a day and I was talking to a friend and had to run to the bathroom. girldep 0 Posted May 4, 2010 I have had very smooth transitions from clears, softs and now regular foods ( YES!) and have had little to no nausea. Sometimes Vitamins make me a little queasy but they did that pre-op. I have learned that eating too fast is painful...a lesson I learn daily. "throwing up" now is different now than pre-op. On day one post op I drank too much too fast and it just came right up. Just like tiffy said no gagging or wretching.
Boredoncemore 0 Posted May 4, 2010 The vomiting with the sleeve is nothing like real vomiting...if I feel it sliding up I beeline for a bathroom, all I have to do is lean over and it is coming up, no heaving...I do get frustrated, and it has gotten better, it happened with eggs about 1 1/2 out and I've not eaten them since! lol. Recently I tried sushi and that was too much, 2 pieces and it was not going to stay down, I did get nauseated and a little sweaty before going to the bathroom. I should have cut those pices into 1/4ths ...but I was excited!
CoachKK 0 Posted May 4, 2010 Ok, I am feeling a little better the more of you that comment. I guess I'll just see what happens. I feel like I'm doing a lot of waiting right now!
deletedsally 8 Posted May 4, 2010 Each person is different. I was prepared because I am very prone to nausea and vomiting after ANY surgery. I had Zophran and Phenergan available in the hospital and used both for the first 24 hours. Before I had my surgery I got prescriptions for sublingual Zophran and some Pherngan suppositories, so I had them on hand the minute I got home from the hospital. I still needed the Zophran every 8 hours for a couple days. After that, I was down to one at bedtime, then after about another week, I was down to 1/2 at bedtime. By the end of the 3rd week, I wasn't having any nausea. I'm glad I had the meds available, because I haven't thrown up at all. Without them, I would have had trouble.
