Actual Pct. of Excess Weight Lost?

Recommended Posts

So, I'm curious what people are averaging for excess weight lost. Most of the medical journals and sites I read about the VSG are pretty consistently saying 60% EWL. However, the anecdotal numbers my surgeon mentioned, as well as the weight loss tickers around here, would seem to indicate that the percentage lost is higher than 60% -- closer to 80-90% is what I'm seeing (I see a LOT of long-term sleevers who are at or below their goal weight).

For reference, I'm 6'1 (well, 6'0.75") and weigh around 330. My "ideal weight" -- with a BMI of around 25, is 185'ish. That means I have 145 lbs to lose. So, 60% of that is around 90 lbs, but 80% is 116 lbs. I'm hoping for 100 lbs, but I'm curious what the "real" numbers are.

I'm sure that the surgeons/surgical centers want to inflate the numbers, but again -- the tickers around here would seem to indicate that 80% is a much more reasonable target.

Anyone?

Edit: you can calculate your BMI here. To get the amount of "excess" weight you lost, figure out what a weight corresponding to a BMI of 25 for your height is, subtract that weight from your starting weight to get your "excess" weight. The amount you lost divided by that last figure is the percentage of excess weight lost.

I will be four months post-op next Tuesday, and I have already lost 57% of my excess weight. That's including what I lost on the pre-op diet and with 155 lbs as my "ideal weight" (25 BMI). My surgeon said that most sleevers average 60% EWL in the 1st year. I'm already almost at 60% and still losing steadily. Sorry, I guess this probably doesn't help much because I'm still losing, but that's where I'm at.

Good question because most surgeons say 60 to 80 percent of excess weight. But most people seem to meet their goal weights in less then 9 months. That is what I am hoping for. I will be interested in other responses.

My surgeon and everything I've read said 60-70% EWL the first year with maintaining around 55-60% further out. I've lost 145lbs in 11 months with the first 113lbs dropping off in the first 6.5 months.

I bet once more studies post on the sleeve we'll get better numbers for EWL.

I am 3 months out ... By the above calculation, I will be 100% of EWL in 6 pounds. That (and the fact that I want to be smaller) is why I choose 135 and not 155. My surgeon felt like it was very do-able and I am going for it!

Yeah I think original number includes the 2 years where they were using 48-60 bougie size in the beginning of the VSG studies. I think this will go up with the last three years most VSG's use the low 30's as a starting size. You also have to take into account those over 60+ bmi who may do VSG as stage 1 for a DS. Their EWL will be lower % total.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
