INSURANCE approved!!!!

Recommended Posts

I'm estatic.... My insurance approved my sleeve today and my doctor's office says that they will be calling me Wed. to schedule my surgery. I can't wait, but at the same time I am so nervous. I keep asking myself if I have preped mentally enough... I can't turn back now! Now I have to start the two week low carb/fat diet starting Monday. My doctor is only booked out 2 weeks so I would rather be on the diet a little longer then needed then not long enough. Yeah I'm definately getting nervous.

Congratulations, mine has also been approved and my surgery is scheduled for May 17. I keep reading articles and posts to remind me why I am doing this. Starting the pre-op diet Monday. I'm really ready to move forward..

It's great your insurance is covering this. Mine won't. Even though I feel having the VSG would save in health costs in the future, a lot of insurance companies don't see it that way.

On another feed it was mentioned that Aetna is now covering VSG surgery, if that is so, many others will as well. It has less complications than a Roux-en-Y and none of the issues with banding. Win/win for insurance companies. It will be standard coverage soon, maybe 2011.

Here it is.....This is a quote from a ASMBS report regarding Aetna and UHC beginning to cover the VSG. They are hopeful that other insurance carriers will follow suit soon.

"We are pleased that Aetna and United Healthcare now includes sleeve gastrectomy among its covered bariatric procedures," said John W. Baker, MD, FACS, President of ASMBS. "In the rapidly changing field of bariatric and metabolic surgery, it is important to provide coverage and access to a wide range of proven treatment methods. Sleeve gastrectomy has now reached that threshold where the data and our experience with the procedure supports its safe and effective use in people affected by the chronic disease of morbid obesity."

Here is a link to the whole report. http://asmbs.org/Newsite07/news/ASMB..._seo_FINAL.pdf . You may have to copy and paste it into your browser. Hopefully between this and the Bariatric Surgery conference coming up in June, we will see more people being successful with insurance coverage.

My primary care doctor called this afternoon - wants to see me in the morning to do "an official pre op exam". What the heck was I seeing him for 6 months for!! But I will do it because I have the clearance paper work that he can sign while I'm there and there can't be any waiting around. I am seriously impatient and I have worked in the medical field (mostly the doctors offices) since I was 16 so I know exactly what can happen. I have found that following behind them making them do it is the only way to get it done quicker. And always having a copy of whatever it is that you need is also a good idea. Wish me luck. Hopefully I will have a surgery date for around the 21st.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
