Post -op liquid question

Recommended Posts

I'm looking over my 1st week post op diet and wondering how exactly am I supposed to get 48 oz in and 40 grams of Protein if all i'm doing is sipping in such small amounts. How did you all do it?

The fact is, most of us didn't. I didn't focus on Protein at all the first week (though I did try to get some). I just tried to get in my liquids. And, the first few days, you might not get it all in - just have liquid with you & sip as much as you can whenever you can.

Hi,

I have not had surgery yet but my nutrition info says to mix Water with a bottle of Isopure (those are 40 grams for one bottle) and sip, sip, sip just about every 15 minutes. I really don't have any other input, sorry. I'm sure I'll be in the same situation as I am starting to realize that it's probably very hard to stay hydrated..

Good luck to you!

Lori

Thanks for asking this question. Some how I am not really thinking of what happens after. I am just thinking about going through. As I understand if you are drinking protien drinks count as both, liquid and Protein. For me, I am going to try to get one good shake in a day. even if it takes all day to do it. Most of the shakes I have on hand are 30+ grams for the first week or to I am hoping that is enough.

Thanks, that helps. I was thinking of the Isopure but didn't know if I would be able to handle the shake. But I bet I could add Protein the a Crystal light sort of drink. That seems doable. I just needed to hear that others had some ideas. I really think I may be obsessing about all the details. Maybe need to let go just a bit.

Yes you should be drinking 64 oz of liquids. Isopure and shakes are the way to get your Protein in. And, it is hard to do the first week. You get better at it the second week, as your stomach heals.

I'm 8 days out, and I always have my drink with me. I've noticed the past couple days, it is getting easier and quicker for me to get all my liquids in. Don't give up!

There was no way I could have choked down a shake in those first days. I ordered a bunch of Fruit Drinks online from "bariwise". They are just like crystal lite only 12-15 grams of Protein. It will get easier!!

You have to sip all day basically. I have yet to reach 64 oz. I did try to get in the Protein grams my doctor asked me to but I just couldn't since I am suddenly very sensitive to smell after surgery. I have since stopped worrying about it and just focused on walking, resting, and drinking Water. Since I am past day 5 I am also now allowed to have flavored protein with water. That is how I get my protein now.

I can't imagine drinking a regular shake either. What I do is use a lot less Water. I dissolve the Protein powder in a small amount of Water and then add a little more water and sip sip sip. On average I am using only 4 oz of water and drinking it over a 30 minute period.

I know I definitely didn't get Protein in until I got to full liquids/mushies. I tried my best, but my surgeon was more concerned with hydration than Protein consumption the first couple of weeks on the post-op diet.

In theory, 2oz of liquid every 15 minutes over the course of the day should get you the 64oz of fluids. Now, once I got to mushies, I found it really difficult to hit my 64oz. because I had to wait 30 minutes after eating to drink. But, it does get better as each week passes.

I can't have Protein shakes until day 5 which will be sunday.

I haven't even tried to get any Protein in yet.

I've just been concentrated on getting enough fluids.

And on an unrelated note...I am finally able to sleep on my side in my bed. Hoping that will allow me to get a good night's rest. I slept in my husband's recliner last night.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
