Just had my 3mnth upper GI & labs completed. Everything came back good (yay!)... except... they found I now have a moderately sized hiatal hernia. UGH! I was SO excited when I heard my labs & new stomach were good, that the news of the hernia totally bursted my bubble. I contacted Dr Aceves right away out of concern & was told that it shouldn't cause me much grief, but I could go down there for a checkup if I wanted to & he would repair through surgery if needed. I was very glad to have some contact with him & get his advice, as PCPs here are not at all familiar with the VSG. The technicians couldn't understand when I was telling them that I COULD NOT chug all that barium down like "everyone else"! lol I will keep Dr Aceves updated as I go along, but for the time being I feel/think all is OK.

I did have a few pity days after finding out & although I know I should be proud of myself I still feel at times that my weight loss is moving VERY slowly... so instantly I just chalked it up in my head to the hernia. So easy to blame something & revert back to my old ways! I've since convinced myself that it's not the hernia, we just all lose at different rates & I just need to keep on doing what I'm doing, as regardless of the speed it is truly working for me!

Should anyone read this & be alarmed at the fact that a hernia was discovered after surgery, please note this... it hasn't been the easiest of roads & I don't post on here very often, but all in all this has been the best thing I've ever done for MYSELF! I feel like a brand new person... rejuvenated, happy & with an all new confidence in my step! I'm at that stage now in which none of my clothes fit & everyone is noticing & commenting on the difference in my appearance. It's a fantastic feeling. I've even become health conscious & motivated by fitness and that NEVER would have happened before! Are there days that I miss having a big bowl of Pasta or a burger & fries... of course, I'm human... but that just helped make me into the person I grew to despise. At the end of the day, I know that the sleeve is just a tool, but I'm using it properly & it's breaking me out of the shell that I used to hide behind for years!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
