Any "long term" sleevers?

Recommended Posts

I think I asked this same question when I was researching the band.....

Is there anyone on here that has personal experiences to share after being "sleeved" for several years?

The band seemed like the thing to do Feb 2008....not a lot of complaints or problems (or none that I distinctly remember). Now pretty much everyone you talk to who has had a band for greater than 1 1/2 or 2 years is having some sort of nuisance issues or had removal, etc.

I am seriously considering the sleeve, but I dread getting 2-3 years out and having issues that can't really be reversed. (I had my band removed in March due to slippage and have no problems resulting from my 2 years being banded.)

Anybody's thoughts are appreciated....shellieb

Hey Shellie, I had a band as well, and only had it for 8 months. I've had the sleeve nearly 11 months, and I can tell you that the 2 procedures are completely night and day.

Here are some links from obesityhelp of patients that are 2-4 years out. Most of the long termers end up just going on about their lives, and rarely post. We really don't have any long termers here that I can think of off the top of my head except for 2. Maybe they'll chime in as well.

At the bottom, in the research links, you can see a study by LapSf Dr. Cirangle that is for patients 5 years out.

Also, you can research gastrectomies for stomach cancer and ulcer conditions as those have been performed for decades upon decades. I did that and it helped me realize that the sleeve was the way to go for my revision.

Best wishes in your research. I wouldn't change one single thing about my decision to go with VSG. I love my life post-op. I have absolutely zero issues eating, drinking, or any other problems. Grant it, I'm not that far out, but my future looks pretty bright at this point. I'm pretty optimistic about my future based on the research I did.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
