Hey all you sleeve veterans, I have a question. Is there any problem with drinking cold liquids after the sleeve?

I really like my beverages ice cold, for the most part, and I was wondering if there is any temperature sensitivity after the op.

I think everyone is a little different. I found warm beverages (like Decaf tea) were the best right after surgrey. 3 months out, I can do cold or warm.

Sometimes my tummy still doesn't like really cold Water. I can always drink it, but some days it takes a lot longer because I have to drink more slowly. For some reason, cold crystal light never bothered me, just plain cold water. In the beginning, it was a lot easier for me (and others have said this too) to drink warm liquids like chicken broth. But that mostly went away for me and sometimes I'll have a cup of caffeine-free tea, but not because I can't drink it cold. Sorry, I tend to ramble! :sad0: My sleeve is a snob, go figure! :001_smile:

Thanks for the responses! So it sounds like there is a bit of cold sensitivity, especially at first.

That might make things a bit more challenging for me; I can drink lots of Water -- if it's cold. I really like the Protein shakes -- if they're cold.

Oh well, I'm sure I'll survive!

I am 7 days out but I have been drinking both since the 24 hour mark when i was finally allowed something. Cold bottled Water, warm broth, cold tea, warm tea, and cold apple juice is about what I have lived off of. I have drinking like a mad woman, I was mostly afraid of dehydration so anything I could get my hands on I drank..

Immediately post-op ice cold stuff didn't work at all. Room temp was fine, and warm liquids were fabulous.

Around 2-3 months out, I could tolerate ice cold stuff. But, I still prefer room temperature liquids even now. I think a lot of that has to do with my sensitive teeth, and years of not drinking cold beverages.

See I had some weird flukey opposite experience. On my second day home (so 5th day out from surgery) I was getting angry because I really couldn't stomach my Protein Shakes and broth was horrible too. So, my dear friends ran and got me a bag of sonic ice and I chew chew chewed that and it really helped me!

Oh and another weird thing, at different times of day I can do more Fluid. In the mornings I can't drink very much, but in the evenings I drink almost like I did preop.

Oh yeah, that was true for me as well. I always started my mornings off with something super warm. It helped relax the stomach.

My doctor told me to start the day with something warm too. He said your sleeve will be much happier all day if it has something warm first.... something about the mucus lining. I am loving the warmth but havent ventured into cold yet.

From the get go (in the hospital) I sipped on near freezing juice-apple juice over ice chips. When I got home I did the same. I also enjoyed sipping on warm broth, chicken, beef, vegetable... I only have trouble with plain Water, tap, bottled, filtered no-matter if it's water I have trouble, (and I'm 7 months out!) I drink Vitamin Water and mix it 50/50 with water then stick it in the freezer so it gets slushy the way I like it.

I guess I'm an odd ball with this, but at 4 weeks out I can basically drink like I did pre-op. Cold, warm, and room temperature liquids are all fine, and I can take a pretty good pre-op sized swig. Haven't tried really hot liquids yet, but I have had Decaf coffee that's been really warm with no problem. And to answer your actual question, I've had ice Water with no problem either. I've been lucky that I haven't found a food or drink intolerance yet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
