High protein preop diet

Well guys... I called my center today and they said I should have my approval the beginning of next week. So I am trying to wrap my head around the high Protein pre op diet. My usual diet is :

Breakfest - Protein Shake with low carb Hood choc milk with a little fruit mixed in

Coffee with Creamer and sugar/splenda mixture

Lunch - salad with romaine lettace and spinach,Turkey, black olives and Ranch dressing

Dinner - meat and veggies

Snack in the am - Greek yogart

Any suggestions? I am not use to a high cal low carb diet and I am so nervous that I wont do what I should and could experience difficulties because of mistakes.

I would say watch the carb count on the fruit because although they're good carbs, your pre-op diet is probably supposed to be low on *all* carbs. Also, make sure the veggies are mostly non-starchy ones. :thumbup:

Greek yogurt is an excellent Protein source, but if you are getting one of the flavored varieties, you will also be getting an excellent carb source! Good luck

Thanks guys!! Any suggestions on a high Protein snack with lil to no carbs? Any suggestions on a coffee creamer with low or no carbs?

Babybel cheese! Super yummy and because its a good quality cheese there is something very satisfying. They come in a few flavor varieties and they are easy as a take along snack.< /p>

Oh and here is another tricky thing! Sometimes you will try to be careful and buy things that are light or low fat, well manufacturers have to make up for the lack of fat and they do it with carbs, so be sure to read your labels!

Mmm, Babybel cheese. I second that! Also beef Jerky, but make sure you check the carbs because depending on the brand, some use sugar for flavoring. Also sugar-free Jello is both low calorie and no-carb. Though you may not want to eat a whole lot of jello since (if you like it) you'll probably be eating some of it early post-op as well.

Also there is a brand called Torani, they have alot of sugar free coffee syrups, and it's really good!! You should be able to find it at your local grocery store. Hopes this helps you out a little...good luck with your diet, the low carb is rough the first few days but after that things should start getting easier. Keep us posted!!

I hadn't thought of the veggie omelet instead of just plain scrambled eggs. Yummy! Definitely gonna use that one. I'm probably going to have to overload on meats in order to feel satisfied on the pre-op diet.

Curiosity:

What does Greek yogurt taste like? Is it sold in specialty stores? And, what flavors/best tasting flavors? Last question: Can you add granola to the yogurt?

Greek yogart for me taste like yogart but really really thick and creamy. I add granola to it now but I will probably have to cut out the yogart and the granola, my favorite flavor is strawberry.< /span>

My favorite low carb snack is Pepperoni chips. Just bake the pepperoni in the microwave for about two minutes pull them out let them cool and they are crispy my replacement for chips! Dip them in a little ranch and that was my evening snack with string cheese.

Greek yogurt is WAY thicker than regular and has a bite to it. Almost like sour cream. I have been talking and purusing though and have several recipes from people on these forums as well as from a NUT friend and I am pretty optimisic about its use. It can be yummy and especially post op when swallowing can be difficult it helps to have something super creamy. Today i ate 1/4 of a taco w/ extra lean ground turkey, half an ounce of cheddar, 1/4 of a low carb tortillia and then greek yogurt and salsa and it was delicious! I am a huge Mexican food buff and this fit the bill.

Greek yogurt rocks LOL. I added Splenda to the vanilla flavor, and it was not too sweet, and not too bitter. I used it with the mushy stage as a sour cream substitute.

My go-to Protein Snacks are:

Beef jerky/Turkey Jerky

Cracker Barrel 2% milk sharp cheddar cheese rectangles (they are individually wrapped) and sold at all the local grocery stores here.

Pork Rinds are amazing. I like the flavored ones best. (I use the regular flavor in all of my recipes that call for bread crumbs)

Turkey pepperoni tossed under the broiler in the oven or toaster oven on a small amount of parchment paper. (I do not like microwaved meat at all because it doesn't go down for me all that well)

Cheese chips ( grate parmesan cheese into little piles on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper or spray the cookie sheet with Pam, pop into the oven at 350 until melted thoroughly, remove from oven, let cool and VOILA little crispy cheese chips) You can also add garlic, lemon pepper, any other spices/seasoning that you enjoy.

Oven-Baked Cheese Crisps Recipe

Lettuce wraps with heavily seasoned chicken. Either Asian or Mexican flare are my favorites. The lettuce replaces the tortilla, and give a little crunch. I prefer bib lettuce or romaine hearts instead of iceberg. I'm a bit of a lettuce snob and refuse to eat iceberg. You can find a lot of recipes for lettuce wraps that you can tweak to make it higher protein/low carb.

Good luck with the pre-op diet. I avoided fruits and starchy, high glycemic index veggies just because of the carb counts.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
