I know that blood loss is a risk of surgery. I am having surgery in Mexicali by Dr Aceves. If I need a transfusion after surgery, is blood available? Also, where will they get the blood and has the blood gone through te same testing as blood at our US blood banks? I say that cautiously as I know there have been cases in the US where infected blood was given through transfusion. Just another question to be answered prior to surgery.

Good question. I had to have a blood transfusion and I sure hope the blood used passed stringent testing standards! I had my surgery at a North Shore LIJ Hospital in NY. Knowing the reputation of Dr. Aceves and his facility, I'd bet they are well equipped and the risks would be no different than here in the states. I'm sure someone who has had surgery will chime in here with a satisfactory answer for you.

I had surgery with Dr Aceves. They do have a laboratory and blood bank (it is a private hospital that sees other patients besides bariatric surgeries). But I do not know what the standards are for blood testing in other countries. That may be something you can find out by googling the internet. I would also recommend asking the coordinator you are working with - most likely either Nina or Monica. This is a good question to ask before hand if you are concerned. Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
