Weight Loss after Surgery

Recommended Posts

Is there such thing as losing to much weight after the sleeve. I was 193 pounds when I had the surgery and I am now at 113. I lost the weight, but it make me look sick or as if something is wrong with me. :)

I think a few regular posters are working on maintenace. To better help you, we need some more information ... How tall are you? How far out from surgery are you?

I know you posted this in the "Ask Dr. Gregg" area, which is good. But I believe only a doctor that sees you in person can answer this question. You would need to have labs done in addition to a body fat analysis. Also, there may be an underlying condition causing your weight loss that has nothing to do with the sleeve. If you haven't already had a check-up with your surgeon, an internist or primary care doc, please do so. You can most certainly lose too much weight.

A low weight is worrisome as you may have limited physiologic reserves. Should a patient with a BMI less than 22 or 23 after weight loss surgery become ill, they may lose additional weight and have a difficult time recovering. If your weight is very low and even if you feel good, you should still be seen by your surgeon for lab testing and counseling on how to maintain or increase your weight to a safer, healthier weight. Usually, a year or two of being very thin is followed by a 10 pound weight gain that gets most patients into a perfect goal range.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
