snickersgirl9 1 Posted April 21, 2010 I went to my walk in clinic tonight because I thought I was getting an UTI. When they tested me for it the dr noticed a very high amount of ketones in my urine. He was quite alarmed even though I told him that I recently has WLS and that my diet has changed significantly. He tested to make sure I was not diabetic (I wasn't before surgery) and all was okay. At first I was alarmed by the dr and his concern but after reading some more about ketones it seems to be perfectly normal. I am eating a diet high in Protein and much lower in carbs. My body is metabolizing my stored fat (lots of it, haha) for energy to run my body. Anybody else have a similar experience?
pnw218 14 Posted April 21, 2010 Yep. I think the whole point of lo carb is going into ketosis. When I first tried Atkins, a 100 years ago, I even followed the book's directions and bought the stix to test my urine to see if I was in ketosis yet. I haven't done it for years, in fact forgot all about it! : )

I have tried Protein diets and lost alot of weight on them, but when I go into Ketosis I get very sick and have to quit them. I have nausea and ALOT of pain in my kidneys. If you google, "ketosis, kidney, and damage" you'll learn ALOT! Ketones, Ketosis, and Ketogenic Diets, Weight Control, Weight Loss, Strategies for Weight Loss, Dieting, Holisticonline.com Jeannie

stcyt 15 Posted April 26, 2010 I checked my keytone level last night because I happened to have some strips around from my last go around with Atkins. I was off the charts. I dont think its super good for you. Like everyonbe has already said....kidney issues etc. I'm on Clear liquids post op and have found that if I drink a little applejuice I can bring the level down. I think a little ketosis is okay.... just not crazy amounts. Take care stacey
delta_girl 931 Posted October 8, 2012 I went to Walgreens and picked up some keytone strips to see if i was in ketosis. I was at next to darkest level of 80. I'm going to guess that all of us are in our first few months?
SLEEVEDNBEAUTIFUL 42 Posted October 8, 2012 What can be done to help with ketosis? Does it cause everything to taste bad?
beefalogal 43 Posted October 8, 2012 I had just picked up some sticks today as well. This afternoon I was just above trace but I think the morning void is the most telling if I remember correctly. I can not get my teeth clean either -- so fuzzy feeling.
mufasas-mom 170 Posted October 9, 2012 I will purchase the strips tomorrow but i wonder if this is why im getting pain in my kidneys?

This afternoon I was just above trace but I think the morning void is the most telling if I remember correctly. I can not get my teeth clean either -- so fuzzy feeling. I'm having problems with all drinks tasting bad. I have to brush my teeth a lot because my mouth always taste like sweet metal. Is this a sign of ketosis ? If so what can I do to help it. lollyfidy1965 402 Posted October 9, 2012 I've been in ketosis for going on 6 months, with no issues at all. I drink between 80-100 ounces of liquids a day, so I know my kidneys are getting sufficiently flushed. I feel fantastic, I'm losing weight steadily, and have lots of energy for working at the gym every day. Ketosis is my friend. Laura
COsleeveDude 273 Posted October 9, 2012 Funny, I just had a urinalysis for an unrelated issue and it showed up with high ketones and a trace of Protein. Both of those are marked as abnormal results, so we'll see what my doc says about how abnormal, if at all, in relation to the weight loss surgery. I wonder if he will ask me to decrease my protein and/or increase my carbs. Although I feel fine.
sramos89 260 Posted October 9, 2012 Yes!! I went into the walk in clinic yesterday because my lower back was hurting in my kidney area and I thought for sure it was a UTI and the first thing the dr asked after looking at my lab results were I I was diabetic! I didn't have a UTI but my urine is very dark, still trying to make sure I get in all my water!!
