Hello All. My name is Yasmin Ireland and I have just registered as a new member. I am sooooo happy to find support as I am scared to death right now. My lapband procedure is scheduled for Friday June 2nd in Mexico. I have done about all the research possible and have found a reputable surgeon there. My friends think I am crazy to go to Mexico, but I am not independantly wealthy and I have to do something about my weight. In other words, I am desperate and fed up with being this heavy. I am 5' 8" and 250 on a good day.

I am not sure what to expect Psychologically so if anyone has any stories that they wouldn't mind sharing with me, I would greatly appreciate it. Pointers are also welcome. Really, any contact with others who are going through this or who have gone through this is desperatly needed. I am a good support in return and I have a great sense of humor (coping mechanism). My friends just don't understand why I am doing this. I am well liked and sociable and they just don't see how differently you are treated when you are this heavy.

I am really wondering what it will be like living at a normal weight.

Hope to talk to you all soon :peace:

Yasmin

Hi Yasmin,

Welcome to LBT! This is a great place to find support and friends. I am from Idaho and was banded 4 weeks ago. I am soooooooooooooo... happy with my decision. Most of my friends, actually all except one have been very supportive and excited for me.

People who havn't been there just don't get how fat people are treated differently. Pretty much everyone on this board totally gets it! A lot of people here were banded in Mexico. Who is you surgeon. I probably would have gone that route but, I was one of the lucky ones whose insurance covered the procedure.

Where are you from? Have you found a local support group in your area? those are great if you can find one.

Well, take care and good luck!

Oh my gosh, it is so nice to find someone to talk to. Thanks for the reply. I am having surgery at the Bajanor Obesity Clinic in TJ. I am in Mtn. Home but attending and working at BSU. I haven't found a doctor who will follow up with me locally so I have arranged to follow up in Mexico if I can find no alternative locally. I have not located a support group other than this forum (and I am incredibly grateful for it). Am not sure if Boise support groups are open to Mexican Bansters as many of them are run by certain clinics.

If you have any suggestions about anything related to your experience let me know. I am so excited (and really scared as well). What is eating like? I know why I am fat, I really like food. Does this change? I realize that banding is just a tool and I am ready to change my bad habits, I just wonder how much of our eating is psychological and how this changes after the procedure.

:clap2:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
