Another Protein Shake Question

Recommended Posts

I have been on Protein Shakes since 1 week post-op and have had no problems with them. I am now 3 1/2 weeks out and can not drink them anymore. It started about a week ago, everytime I would drink one I would feel sick for an hour or so. Now everytime I try and drink one I throw-up. I have tried different kinds and at different temps. but nothing helps. Has anyone else had this happen? Does it go away? This is my main source of Protein because I am still at the mushie stage.

bless your heart, it is pretty bad when something gets sicking. . .i don't drink them everyday, only every now and then. . .if i find that i want to eat something, i'll try to substitute the meal for one Protein Drink, usually it's thirst and not hunger and the Protein shake does good for me that way. . i have heard along the vine and my doctor, that as long as you get in your 70 grams of protein per day your ok. . it doesn't necessarily have to be with the shakes. . so i count protein grams. . . lots of cheeses, yogurts, soft meats likes chicken and fish. . . good luck!

Teresa - You are just 4 days behind me and we had the same doctor. I am still doing a Protein Shake once a day but that is just to boost my Protein - I could get it all from food. Have you tried adding Protein Powder to your mushies instead of doing the shakes? I wouldn't recommend drinking something that is making you hurl. How are the mushies going down? You may want to call Nina to see if she has other ideas or if you can advance to soft/reg food now that you are so close to 4 weeks. Then you should be able to get all your protein with real food. Good luck!!

Are you able to drink milk without issue?

I became slightly lactose intolerant post-op, and I think that's why I had a lot of trouble with whey Protein drinks. Well, I hated the way they tasted or the textures, but they made me sick as well.

Can you try a soy based Protein mixed with Water?

I was able to have chicken/egg/tuna salad on mushies/puree stage. 2 egg whites have 14grams of protein, and 3oz of chicken has 21grams of protein. I know you may not be able to get that much in during one meal, but spreading it out through the day may help you hit your protein goal.

When I couldn't drink milk, I was still able to eat cheese and yogurt without issue. Milk and whey tore my stomach up and I would either throw up or have explosive diarrhea and gas.

Tiffykins has a good point, and I would also make sure it's not general Protein sensitivity (when you feel nauseous, do you experience any pain in the right upper quadrant of your abdomen? Especially, does it radiate to the back?) If so, it could be the beginning of gall bladder issues, which are very common in WLS patients.

Thanks everyone for your quick responces! I do not have a gallbladder anymore, had it removed years ago. I have tried mixing the Unjury unflavored Protein with applesauce and I still got sick. It is so strang because I still like the taste of it. The only food that I can tolerate is applesauce, cottage cheese and eggs. I would ask about moving to solids but I don't think I am ready for them yet. I am hoping by Friday that I might be. I am hoping that this whole thing will pass. I tried milk earlier and it did not make me sick but I have discovered that I do not like the taste of it anymore. (weird) I so appreciate you all taking the time to answer, this is such a nice group of people on here.

Theresa,

When you said you were throwing up I didn't realize it was directly coorelated with your Protein shakes. I am so sorry. Nina emailed me some more specific food plan stuff that I can send you way. I think just do your best and when you start on whole foods you will better be able to get all your Protein in. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

Good luck,

Anna

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
