Snappy comebacks for rude comments about WLS

Recommended Posts

The bottom line is that VSG is WAY safer than being obese is. WAY safer. Even for young people, your risk of dying from obesity is a ZILLION times higher than your risk of dying from an uncomplicated laparoscopic surgery like VSG.

So if people are arguing that you shouldn't get the surgery because of the risks, you should point this out.

Of course, the "safest" way to get skinny is through diet and exercise. But for this, you have to factor in the 95% failure rate. When you do this, the safety numbers drop dramatically and VSG starts looking good again.

I had one of these recently and it was reading this thread that helped me with my response:

(Friend) "I thought about you when I was at a buffet this weekend and felt sorry for you that you could not eat what you wanted...don't you miss that?"

(me) "No, I don't miss anything, especially my CPAP machine or my knees hurting when I go down stairs."

I haven't had any bad comments. If I did I would assume they were motivated by jealousy as I look so utterly fab now hehehehe!

This thread makes me not want to tell anyone. I used to get these snide comments about extended nursing of my sons and I think they would apply.

In response to, "you are going to spoil him" or it could be used "Isn't it unhealthy for you to eat that little? or Should you be eating that?"

"I'm doing the best I can as I'm sure you are doing your best." If they really were doing their best they wouldn't be all up in your business.

In response to, "You still giving that kid the titt?" or could be "You don't look healthy, you are too thin, your head is too big, etc."

"Wow, you sure are interested in my boobs" (insert creeped out look) could be "Wow, you sure are interested in my body." (insert same look)

"You took the easy way out." response "I guess you wouldn't know much about easy vs hard seeing as you have never dealt with obesity."

"You could have done it on your own, just takes willpower." "Actually all my willpower was used up not punching people like you in the face." (smile)

"I'm just worried about you being too thin." "Thank you for all this newfounded concern. How much would you like me to weigh?"

You could just say, "in a post apocolyptic world, I'm less likely to eat you now?"

I like it - why not add, just to keep them on their toes:

"Unless I divide you up into really small portions, and make sure I chew you thoroughly before swallowing!"

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
