I had my surgery on Tuesday April 6th. It has only been 3 and a half days so I am trying to be patient but I am just feeling awful. I am having a very hard time drinking anything. I know I need fluids but everything I drink makes my stomach spasm. It is like my stomach cramps up and doesn't want the liquid to go in so it crawls back up some and gurgles. Then I burp and hiccup all at the same time. It is quite painful. Luckily, I have not thrown anything up but it hasn't been easy forcing it down. I am taking very small sips and I have tried drinks at every temp but nothing seems to make it better. I would say that warm is definitely better than cold but not by much. I am mostly concerned that I am getting dehydrated. I have been feeling very weak. Although this could just be from the surgery. I would appreciate if anyone could give me some advice about this. I am starting to worry.

I would not hesitate to contact my surgeon and/or primary care physician. Things may ease up naturally but dehydration can be averted if necessary intravenously while you are examined. I was concerned early out and expressed my concern to my surgeon who had me come in for an upper endoscopy. Since I hadn't had much food/fluid intake for 2 days he also administered intravenous fluids. Everything checked out fine and that put me at ease and gradually I was taking in enough fluids by sipping things I liked (vitamin water). I hope you feel much better very soon and will keep us posted. Take care.

Definitely drink your liquids warm.

Vegas Angel had spasms and Dr. Aceves told her to drink her liquids warm to prevent spasms. You should call your doctor for other advice, but also drink sips of warm liquids through out the day.

ITA on the warm liquids. In the beginning, I even warmed up plain Water and added a packet or two of fake sugar. The Crystal Lite, except for peach, didn't taste good initially.

I had many of the same issues and it definitely helped to drink my liquid warm. This caused alot of burping but made me feel better because it relieved some of that gas pressure that was built up in my esophogas and stomach. chicken bouillon made me feel the best. This does get better with time but I still have this experience sometimes. I have this constant feeling of needing to belch but nothing comes up but Dr. Aceves said this will go away around the 3 month mark. The best thing I can tell you is just keep trying different types of liquid until you find something that will go down easier. I certainly cannot do plain Water and still have a hard time with crystal lite in plain water. I did go see my PCP about 2 weeks out and she said it was a case of gastritis. Good luck and keep us posted on how you are feeling

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
