Am I hungry, or do I think I'm hungry??

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm on post op day 5, and the last couple of days I've been really hungry. This is rather troubling since I thought the surgery would take away my hunger, especially in the beginning. Or could this just be what I've heard people call "head hunger"? Will it get better when I move on to mushies?

Also, (possibly TMI) I've been having some cramping and loose stools. Does anyone know if pepto bismol is alright in the all liquids phase?

Thanks, you guys help me out so much.

Gherlin the hormone that causes hunger stays in our bodies for a while after surgery. And I think the cramping and loose stools are just a part of the joy of a liquid only diet. I would double check with my surgeon about how they want you to handle an unhappy tummy. Best of luck!

It does take awhile for the ghrelin to leave your body. yes it will be easier when you move to mushies.

Is your tummy growling or is it just a feeling of "that sounds really good"

The diarrhea is very normal if you're on a liquid diet. you can take immodium if it gets bad.

It's an hard to explain empty feeling mixed with "that sounds good". I'm on an acid reducer so I don't think it's that. Hopefully it's the ghrelin. Also, I guess I didn't realize how much I liked eating food. I miss it now. Will that feeling pass?

I went through the same thing at about 7-10 days out, and it did finally pass... It's hard, but hang in there! :)

Well sorry to burst anyone's bubble here, but i'm 3 months out and STILL really hungry. . nope, not head hungry, real gurglly stomach hungry:drool5:. . but i combat that with a little Protein til the next gurgle. . . never did get rid of that hunger. . . it was very dissappointing:drool:. . . oh well, life goes on, i'm still losing weight and like it. . . hunger and all as long as i'm not eating like a barbarian like before, i'm happy. . . good luck.

I'm like Thin, I still feel hunger too. At first maybe it was stomach acid but as time goes on I still feet it and have to put something on my stomach. That is the important part, putting good food in and not grab a quick snack. When I am getting my fluids in between my meals it seems to flush out my stomach and I get hungry faster...go figure. I am still losing nicely, not quickly but I am fine with that and happy I did this. I cannot overeat!

Hello,

I'm six weeks out. I had the runs from day 5 to 10 but realized it was from a whey Protein shake that I added on Day 5. When I stopped that, everything was better. By around day 14 I could tolerate it again and now I'm just fine.

Hunger for me ... I felt it return on Day 10. When I moved to pureed foods on Day 14 it really stopped. Now at 6 weeks, I eat 3x a day and I do get hungry right about the time I should eat again. Lighter Proteins like fish and I tend to get hungry a little sooner. That said, it's nothing like pre-op hunger, just a little nagging feeling that it's time to eat. Nothing wrong with that!

No hunger here. But I got diarrhea because I drank a Isopure in the littler bottle (new product) it has sugar in it! :) I would check and see if you are drinking something with too much sugar .

Hang in there WE WILL DO THIS! :confused1:

D.

Yup, I do that too just gurgle abit and i'll eat a bit of Protein. . i know i can't overeat ever again, so eating here and there doesn't bother me at all. . . i know i'm not eating poorly so that is the main thing. . . and apparently it is working because i'm not gaining or stalling. . . :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
