Tortillas are No Go!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Living in the Southwest, I have eaten tortillas all my life. A bean burrito is as basic as a sandwich to me. Now I am not complaining, just noting, that when I try a piece of one now, post-VSG, it clumps like paste in my throat. It is just funny how much changed in what I can successfully eat. Carbs are a no-no but you got to have a few. Down the road, I hope to use the high-fiber tortillas like Mission's Carb Balance to cook with. But that's not the same as a really yummy flour tortilla:drool5:.

What basic foods have y'all had to give up?

Take Care,

Pennie

I have been ok with tortillas, I just put cheese in them tho : ) I haven't tried alot of Beans . . . kind of afraid to! lol

I don't know if popcorn counts as a basic food but I miss it! It was one of those things I forgot to have during my last week pre-op. A bag of buttered, salted popcorn with diet pepsi was often a quick dinner!

I haven't had issues with anything so far, but I have found that I'm not loving salmon like I did pre-op. It still tastes good for a few bites, but that's about it.... that's the only change I've noticed since surgery too.

I had 1/4 of a "real" one yesterday with a couple of pieces of fajita beef and onions. I was sooooo happy. :thumbup1: Saturday I'm going to El Charo and plan on a carne asada taco. I won't be able to eat the whole taco but 2 bites will make me very happy.

By the way PNW Beans go down really easy. I've been eating them since the mushie stage. If you soak and change the Water a few times while they soak it minimizes any gassiness if that is what you are afraid of.

I can make a list I think I've tried it all...

I pretty much eat like I used to, but less. However, that said...

some things I eat seem to go straight to my stomach, but a LOT of times after I eat something I love like a true comfort food I don't really feel full in my stomach but have a tightness or uncomfortableness in my THROAT. Does anyone else get this? Maybe from overeating sometimes, but also just from what it is and maybe from also not being able to chew it down enough. The worst part is it takes away the satisfying feeling of the meal b/c it is like it is just stuck up there and I can't feel whether or not my tummy is happy. Even if well chewed, just the type of food I think.

And things that do that throat thing to me are Chinese food (any I think b/c I love it and overeat or b/c I try to eat Soup first which doesn't agree with my sleeve); any tortilla other than a crispy prefried tostada, breads that are not very well toasted, eggs, refried Beans, tuna salad (ooooh not a good experience for me), fish that is a little tougher, rice and probably Pasta although haven't done that yet. Oh and FRENCH FRIES - they are a meal killer for me.

But the great news was I had 3.5 fried shrimp at my FAVORITE boat, and it went all the way down. I haven't had any in 2 mos, but was so excited it made it to the stomach and happily skipped by the throat. But promise you if I ate even one of those darn french fries I would be all chokey like in my throat for a while and not feel really satisfied.

Mashed potatoes do well, but a lot of thick things don't do as great. Fresh steamed spinach is great, crab cakes are great too...the best with spinach. Pairing the crab cakes with spinach is MUCH better than pairing with something thick.

We eat a lot of eggs with refried black Beans and bread b/c my husband is from Mexico. And salsa But I can toast the french bread well and eat it with the beans and tiny bit of salsa and be fine. But kind of like french fries, eggs change it all up and make it a not satisfying meal for me.

Liquidy Soups just don't work for me. Feels like the next thing I eat floats up into my throat. Creamy Soups do better for me.

Beef Jerky and sunflower seeds are what I eat when I just need to chew for a while. Frito Lay brand sunflower seeds are not as salty, but I don't eat the shell, be careful.

Gas is an awesome bi-product of Beans. OK...so I am a guy. Pull my finger and run.

In all honesty. Beans and me do not agree. And it is not the flatulence. I have trouble with the clumping in my belly after I eat them. Then I get the slimes and it is the skin that is causing the major problems. Last time I tried to have some beans I spent 30 minutes spitting into the sink until I cleared them all out.

Now, for me, no problems with tortillas. I have to take very small bites, chew chew chew, swallow, and wait a bit for the next bite. Plus is do not subscribe to the "no Water during meals" mantra. I take very small sips and it helps to keep the slide greased.

Good luck!

I haven't really had to give up any foods. I choose to not eat the skin of pickles or cucumbers because a few months ago, I ate them, and then burped them up hours later. It was kind of gross, and icky, and I'm all for not doing something again once I get utterly disgusted.

I eat tortillas like a champ. I can eat a small taco size tortilla with meat, cheese and a little salsa.

I couldn't eat a lot of things within the first 3-6 months post-op. Something changed at 6 months, I found more and more foods that once bothered me really worked great. I still avoid corn, but I didn't eat a lot of it before the sleeve therefore I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

Nothing has given me issues recently except baked pork chops. They went down great, but kind of sat in my sleeve like a brick for a couple of hours. We don't most pork products so I won't be missing them at all.

This last week while out of state, I ate so much stuff that I had problems with in the past. Least to say, while on vacation, I gained 4 pounds. It'll fall off again now that I'm home so I'm not concerned with the gain.

Try things again in a few weeks because most people find that they can have anything they want, it just takes time.

Moving faster is good. :)

I find they digest/are tolerated so much better than meat. If you like Beans eat some!

LOL about moving faster!

I had mexi food for the second time at our favorite restaurant last night. A few bites and I was too full. It was much less than I was able to eat the last time! I was very disappointed!

The Beans, ground beef and tortilla went down ok, I think it was the cheese - it was on there pretty thick. I sipped as much Water as possible to hopefully loosen things up. The tummy ache finally went away but it was definitely in my throat for awhile! :confused1:

Some days I just can't eat much at all. I think I may take bigger bites or eat too fast without realizing what I'm doing. Last night I had chicken. I cut tiny, tiny pieces and ate slow. No problems.

I miss popcorn soooo much!

I was told I could have popcorn after six weeks. I don't count my carbs, so I occasionally have a 100-calorie bag as a nice protein-filled snack. :thumbup1:

I gave up red meat... a good rib eye use to be my fav, but is tooo heavy now.

I don't eat bread.. it feels like it continues to grow in my stomach for hours!!

I'm a big Soup person now.... ya'll gotta try Bear Creek Soup mix... 8 cups of Water and thats it!! I love the brocolli and cheese.. I add a bag of frozen broccolli to it- YUmmmmmmmmmmmY!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
