4 days out and a little panicky - reassure me I'm doing the right thing!

Recommended Posts

Hey

Just thought I'd pop in to get this off my chest. Flying to India tomorrow afternoon to get my surgery done on Tuesday. I was on a 2 week pre-op of liquids only (3 SlimFast shakes a day - powder mixed with water) and while I've been about 80% or so good - there have been a couple of times (even as late in as today) that I've broken down and had some turkey/chicken breast (surely can't be that bad... right?!) and a couple of times I've had a small amount of dark chocolate.

I've lost about 7-9 kilos (15 - 20 lb) in the last couple of weeks - but I'm terrified that I've jeopardised the surgery by thinking that the liver will still be too big/fatty.

Am I getting too worked up over nothing, or am I in trouble?

Hoping to join in on the losers' bench in a couple of days

Steve

Hey Steve,

You should be fine. I only lost 8 pounds prior to surgery and my

doctor allowed us to go out the nigh before surgery and eat anything

we wanted too. If you have lost 15 to 20 pounds you should be okay.

Good Luck

Gary

Hi Steve, I am pretty sure you will be FINE! I've read that every ten lbs lost prior to surgery does wonders. PLUS, your cheats were mostly Protein. My doctor has me on a one week high protein, low carb diet as well and I weigh almost 280 lbs at 5'2' inches tall. You were smart not to cheat with any potatoes, rice, noodles, etc. GOOD FOR YOU!!! Those small amounts of dark chocolate shouldn't hurt.

Morning Steve, I didn't even have to go on a pre op diet, doctor took me just how i am. . .but then again, that was my doctor. . . he said 2 weeks was not enough to shrink the liver so he didn't see the point of that. . it just makes me wonder about the competancy of the physicians who want to shrink the liver??????? good luck and see you on the loser side soon!

Steve .. you posted 4 days out on the 26th so it looks like today may be your day. Thinking about you.

thinoneday ... I don't think it has anything to do woth competancy, it only makes common sense to me. The smaller the liver the less you have to work around and thus the less risk of something going wrong.

Just about everyone you talk to tells you that you will need to go on a pre-op diet ... all those doctors can't be wrong or incompetent!

I went on a pre-op diet 4 weeks before my surgery. I loved it. I drank 2 Jay Rob Protein Shakes a day, make my morning one like a frappacino by adding a little bit of instant coffee and ice cubes w/skim milk in blender. I'd make another in the afternoon, chocolate or vanilla then at night I had a nice hearty salad with grilled shrimp or chicken. The morning of surgery I was 16lbs down and my surgeon was pleased. It got me to thinking that I could have stuck to that food plan and continued to lose the weight without having the surgery. But I went ahead with the surgery and the 4.5 month FINALLY was feeling that I made the right decision. I now am fairly certain I made a good decision. Best wishes to all who have their surgery dates within the next few days. Take the measures recommended by your surgeon and by those on this board who have already gone through all of the trials and tribulations of post surgery the first few months.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
