Recommended Posts

I need the help of those whom already been through it. I am 2-3 weeks away from my surgery date, and i am totally confused as in to what kinda diet i should be on till the surgery date?

I also noticed some of you mentioned a liquid diet pre-op. How is it done? and when should i start it?

Your surgeon didn't give you any kind of instructions? Mine required no pre-op diet, other than Clear Liquids the day before surgery. Others require a couple of weeks on a liquid diet... you really should call your surgeons office to clarify, since they're all different.

I did not have to do a special diet before my surgery. I ate normally - or rather everything in sight. I did eat lighter the day before surgery but just because I was traveling and that was how it worked out. My BMI was a little over 33.

Like was mentioned before, call and ask the dr's office. Like most surgeries, you need to have your stomach empty at the time of surgery, but that usually just means not eating after midnight the night before. For some, it sounds like there are medical reasons (fatty liver for one) that makes a specific diet necessary ahead of time.

I had a BMI over 49 the day before my revision, and even higher before my initial WLS lapband. For both surgeries, I had to do low carb/high Protein for 1 week before. The night before surgery nothing but clear liquids after dinner, and then nothing by mouth after midnight.

Every program is different, and every surgeon requires something specific for their patients. Give them a call and ask what is the best option for you. Make sure you get a post-op diet plan to follow as well.

Hey u guys .. Thanks for answering. I only had a phone consult with the Dr. because am an international patient. On the phone he mentioned trying to lose any amount of weight prior surgery date, but there was no specific guidelines to what am suppose to do. However two days ago they sent me by e-mail all the information i need to deal with my diet POST-op, and couple pre-op. So here's a quote from the file:

"

Please try and LOSE weight! This will often times make it easier for your doctor to perform the surgery and thus safer for you. Losing as little as 5-10 pounds can decrease the size of your liver. A smaller liver makes it easier for us to see your stomach and the parts of the intestinal tract that we operate on. In some higher risk patients, we do make it mandatory to go on a two week liquid Protein diet prior to surgery. We recommend all patients do this to reduce the chance of a conversion to an open procedure or other serious complications. "

So am guessing here i should go on a liquid diet from next week since my BMI is 68 . .

but i dont know how to do it? would someone try and give a clear idea of a regular day on a liquid diet?

Thx

I am not trying to give you recommendations, as I am just a preop myself, and your surgeon is the one who should do that. But, I would do some reading and consider some low carb/high Protein. It really contributes to the health of your liver during surgery, making it less slimy. It has to be slid over when you get the surgery laproscopically and you don't want it to get knicked or be in the way. The surgery is already a lot for a body to cope with let alone any complications with a liver. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
