So this may be more than you wanna hear, but I am on week two of my liquid preop and I keep getting stomach cramps, then an URGENT need to use the restroom. Then obviously only liquids come out. I understand the liquid in and liquid out, but is it normal to have cramping and will this continue post op?

Thanks,

Anna

It may be from the artificial sweeteners in them... a lot of people are affected that way by them, but it's usually the ones that end in "-itol" like malitol and sorbitol. I think most of the Proteins are sweetened with Sucralose (splenda), but I don't know about all of them, not by a long shot. What's yours sweetened with?

Anna why did the doctor put you on a liquid diet? I have to do Atkins for a week.

That happened to me often when I was on liquids, full liquids and even mushies. It happens now if I dare venture to drink anything with Splenda (sucralose) or as the above mentioned substances that end in "itol"...I bloat with gas and then wham I have to hit the bowl quick or else...needless to say I avoid artificial sweeteners.

AHHA, splenda! Thanks for posting this, been happening to me too. Splenda is new to me so that must be the culprit! I am switching back to the "blue"sweetner.

I chose the to do the liquid diet, because I was super nervous about complitcations with my liver, but Dr. Aceves only requires the low carb/high Protein and after several days of success and then blowing it in the evenings, I am going to do the thing our surgeon wanted me to do. Hmmmmm guess they do know best. Thanks all!

it might continue for about another 2 weeks after surgery and then you'll battle with Constipation. . .make sure you walk, drink your fluids and if needed use Miralax and a stool softener. . . I had the same problems. . .it's an adjustment phase and does go away. . . good luck'

I'm on day 4 of my 2 week liquid pre op diet, and I'm having similar issues with digestion and stomach cramps. I've also had 2 really intense charlie horses since being on this diet.

What are you having for liquids? My diet is 3 Glucose Control Boost drinks and 2 100 cal ff yogurts. The thought of Boost and yogurt is making me gag at this point, and I still have 10 more days. I am sooooo hungry, but I want to make my liver as small as possible. I just hoping that the hunger goes away post op.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
