Should he be able to drink this much?

Recommended Posts

I am 7 days out and on full liquids. I am able to do 2 ounces of "calorie" liquids per hour along with the 2 ounces of Water or water or water substitutes, but I can just keep on drinking water all the time and have no problem with getting full or vomitting.

I am worried there is something wrong or that I am messing up my sleeve

No,everything is fine. Liquids just run right through. We aren't supposed to drink fast or more than 2 oz every 20 min.in the beginning because they don't want any pressure or stress against the staple line. Try to sip!

I was worried a couple of weeks out about the same thing, and was told the same thing. Must be your swelling is going down very well! Don't worry... as soon as you start adding real food back in, you will KNOW right away that the restriction is there, believe me!! :thumbup1:

I was supposed to be drinking 64 oz a day by day 5 and had no problems. I'm 3.5 weeks out now and can drink the same as I did before surgery.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I saw so many people that said that they weren't able to drink as much and I was really worried. I am going to try sipping though.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
