Night before surgery

Did anyone have a "last dinner" outside of the fast on their last day before surgery?

I was banded last week by Dr. Ortiz in Mexico & he specifically talked to me about this during my consult. He said if you have been on a diet for a long while, then gorge yourself on a "last dinner" before surgery, with the nerves of surgery & the large meal...you could let loose on the operating table. He said it would not be a pretty site & would strongly suggest against it!

I had a pre-op diet for 2 weeks before surgery, so no... I just had ALL my last dinners in the weeks before my pre-op diet began!

Nope. It really isnt as if you'll never eat your fave foods again. Sorry, but I just cannot understand the logic of pigging out before you have weight loss surgery, it just rings alarm bells for me that you're not ready for the commitment. I dont want to sound sanctimonious but the minute I committed to that surgery, my lifestyle changed.

Plus you're going in for a general anaesthetic! Having a huge gutload of food in you is not really sensible - even if its left your stomach it will still be in your intestines.

I didn't mean "pig out" by saying "last dinner". I have been instructed to eat only cottage cheese and yogurt for 2 weeks....all I REALLY wanted to know is if anyone ate anything other then their preop food on the day before surgery, even if just a piece of toast.

Pigging out has been a thing of the past for me for a month now.....and you couldn't be more wrong..........I am MORE than ready for this surgery.

I didn't have to do any certain diet ahead of time, so I ate whatever I wanted to. The thing is we all think we'll never be able to eat certain things again, and usually we can. Good Luck!

I had a half of deli sandwich (3 inches) with 5 Doritos's around 9 pm for an 11 o'clock am surgery. If that constitutes as 'pigging out' then I guess I did!

I was too scared. Any solid food that you eat could potentially cause the stomach muscle contractions that go along with digestion. Placing the band is a delicate enough procedure that I didn't want to stack the odds (even if only a little) against successful band placement.

Wow. I just checked the date on the start of this thread. That'll learn me to reply to "new" posts.....

Frankly, I'm an idiot.

Sasha, I'm surprised you were "allowed" to eat that, I was told a very light Breakfast, then liquids only after noon.

There is a lot of talk about the effect of heavy food and the liver being enlarged. I read one thread where the doctor almost had to cancel the "install" of the band because the liver was so enlarged.

Like Plain, why take the chance and make it more difficult for your surgeon.

I have to admit, I do regret not eating a great big cheeseburger a few days before, LOL.

I have to do Clear Liquids the whole day! I'm thinking I might even start with the clear liquids the night before.

I have to do clear liquids the day before as well. I'm going to start dieting now, even though I'm about 5 weeks away and then once a week up til the 48 hours pre-surgery, I'm going to allow myself one good meal. Not a "saddle up to the buffet" kinda thing, but a couple slices of my favorite pizza, a cheeseburger, homemade lasagna, thai food (that kinda thing)... I think I just planned my splurge meals! LOL

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
