My husband was originally scheduled for VSG on 2/4/2010. The night before we found this forum and began reading about the hunger after surgery and wondered if the "hunger headaches" he suffers from now would plague him after the surgery as well. I contacted the NP from his surgeon's office and her reply was "I don't have a crystal ball, I can't see the future." Obviously he immediately decided not to have the surgery based on this completely unprofessional behavior. Since then he has been trying to lose the weight on his own and although he has had some success feels like he won't be able to do it, so he is wondering if anyone out there might know of a surgeon that performs the VSG via the SILS method? If so, please respond.

I googled Sils method and it directed me to a bunch of sites for hysterectomies, not VSG.

Can you give me more information on the Sils method for VSG?

I never had hunger headaches. What he is experiencing sounds like what I had when I first did Atkins, and it was my body getting used to not having carbs, it lasted a few days, a few Tylenols later and it passed. I didn't have any issues after having my revision to VSG from the band.

Not sure what surgeon you were looking into, but there are several wonderful surgeons in the Dallas area that perform laproscopic sleeve procedures that come highly recommended and referred by their patients here. The reason I had the sleeve done is because it was easy for me to lose the weight, I couldn't keep it off and that's where the sleeve comes into play.

Okay - edit to add- You're looking for a surgeon that performs the single incision VSG, and I don't know of any in the Dallas area. I know Dr. Nick, and I'm pretty sure Dr. Barker and Dr. Kim both use the standard 4-5 incision sites to perform the VSG.

What a horrible comment to say. . . that was totally unprofessional! I was sleeved by the most sweetest physician ever here in San Antonio. . the office staff is very professional and they will call you back regarding your questions. . . but to answer your question myself, after i had the surgery i DID NOT have any headaches regarding hunger again. . .you won't really experience hunger the way you do now, it's more like pressure, but that comes after the swelling and stuff is over. . . in the first 1 1/2 weeks i lost 32 lbs and then at 7 weeks i had lost 53 lbs. . .i'll weigh in only at the doctor appts and have another appt on the 16th. I know that the weight loss has slowed down drastically but my attitude toward it is whatever! I look really good at the weight i'm at right now so whatever happens happens. . .good luck in your journey and if your interested in more information on my doctor just let me know, he does have his own website. . .

I have hunger headaches now and the way my surgeon explained it to me was after the VSG surgery my hunger will be removed so no headaches. Good luck in your search for a new surgeon, I can not belief the response you received after voicing your concerns.

Question ~ other than the obvious of only having one incision site, is there a benefit or specific reason for one vs 4-5? It sounds like the single incision is also laproscopic so also small in size?

thanks!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
