What's a good OTC pain med?

Recommended Posts

Hey Gang,

Wondering what everyone uses for headaches/muscleaches? I'm almost six weeks out, and, although I feel so much better already, I still get occasional muscle aches that I used to take Aleve for. I understand Aleve is not a good choice, post-sleeve. What do the rest of you post-opers use for occassional pains?

Thanks!

Carol

Aleve has been fabulous for me. I take the Aleve liqui caps without issue. I've also taken the liquid adult Tylenol, but that didn't settle with my stomach very well. Not sure why, but the Aleve has never caused me any issues. I have arthritic knees, and when it gets cold, or super rainy, I have to take something, and Tylenol doesn't cut it.

One of the big reasons I chose the sleeve over RNY for my revision is due to my knee issue. I wasn't supposed take NSAIDs with my band, but I did take children's Motrin for pain when I had the band. I was cleared for Aleve at 6 weeks out when I had a mild UTI, and I needed to take something.

Hello Carol,

I take Arthritis Strength Tylonol, But I buy the Wal-Mart Equate Brand. A person can take two tablets 3 times in 24 hours and each tablet is 650 mg of actephetaphen (Mispelled).

If you have a YMCA close by, check to see if they have an Aquatic (Swimming Pool) exercise program. It is a big help and also the Hot tub or sauna room is helpful for muscle and arthritis pain. I wish you all the best!!

keys... though i have not had the sleeve yet... i take aleve as part of my RA medications. i was directed to the sleeve because it was the WLS that i cound have and take my required medications. the only issue immediated pre and post op is the increase in bleeding. so since you are 6 weeks out, you should be able to take it. kelly

Hey Guys, thanks for all the feedback, I am so happy to hear Aleve is ok! Nothing works better than that stuff, IMHO. I'm assuming the solid pill form is ok at this stage? Being down almost 40 pounds has (duh) already made a huge difference in my muscle stuff; there's only been one day when I was really sore and that was when I posted this question. Thanks again, you all rock!!

Carol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
